Tips for learning how to front boardslide to fakie. This can be a challenging trick because you're sliding backwards on the box. To help make learning front boards easy, I'll show you three ways to train and prepare safely. I'll also break down each part of the trick and show you how to overcome the most common problem.
Get started training for the front board by sliding between regular and switch on the snow. Ride in the same way you would when approaching a box, then slide backwards on your toe edge, until your boards comes around switch. Practice sliding like this with some speed and until your comfortable with the switch ride out.
Next, train for the front board by doing backside 180's. Backside 180's use the same movements as the front board, except your doing them in the air. Practice until you're confident with your back 180's and landing switch with a bit speed. Landing with speed is important, because you'll be need some speed to help carry you across the box.
The third training tip is to first master back boardslides to fakie. Back boards are easier than front boards because you're facing forward. Here you can get comfortable being balanced on the box and sliding with your board completely flat.
After you've done some training, it's time to take it to an easy box. On the approach for the boardslide do one or two turns to set your speed and line yourself up. Arrive on your toe edge and ready to do a small pop to get your board onto the box.
As you pop off your toe edge, turn your head and shoulders up hill to get your board sideways. Land on the box with your knees bent and board completely flat. Look your head down and around to the end of the box, so you can see the end coming and prepare for the landing. It's good to visual sliding on the box ahead of time, so you have an idea of how long you'll be on the box for.
For the landing keep your head looking around until your board is straight. Bend your knees and ride out the landing switch. If you feel like your boards not coming around to switch, then you may have to twist to get your board straight for the landing.
A common problem for front boards is committing to the trick. Use the three training tools of sliding on snow, back 180's and back boards to build your confidence so you can fully commit.
