I was going to mention it but others already did, I have seen this done a few times before on Detroit Muscle and other shows and they indicated that this is important. Glad that you checked it. :)

Melling has a video on pump installation, shows bolts finger tight and turn the crank 360, self centers.. I shimmed mine during install and I noticed when I turned the crank 180 after shimming it was no longer centered, so that shows the pump drive isn’t perfectly round. So in a nut shell, shimming almost seems like a waste of time just follow Mellings instructions and sleep easy. Guarantee GM does none of that when they build the engines.

Glad you look over your comments or your motor might have had some big issues if you skipped it! Glad you looked, have a great evening and a awesome rest of the week.

I totally forgot this in my earlier book 💥⚡💥!
Your oil pan pickup looks like it's bent. I'd definitely check it and make sure the clearance is less than 3/8 but more than a 1/4 inch.
Might be a good idea to put a bung on both sides of the pan. That great double bung function let's you do it, that bottom end spoolin' way low, makes them big ole tires go and go, it's how you do it! That double bung freshness makes Beavis' day :-) 4.8 cranks are good to 1000+ horse 🐴 purrs🐈, pistons, rods, and twins makes her fast again.

There's a stock pump mod as well that helps with flow.

I've never done this with the feeler gauges as described on the internet. I've yet to see it in a manual and doubt it's necessary. I always bolt the oil pump up slightly snug and rotate the cranks to allow the oil pump to center itself where it's happy and then torque down.

I wish I saw this video before after my first rebuild but I had learn it the hard way…another rebuild. I don’t mind learning from mistakes but why did I have to learn from an expensive mistake?

LT 862 snd 706 heads are exactly the same, early 706 had porosity problems.

So how about centering the balancer on the front cover seal? Do you guys install the balancer, before you snug down on the front cover?

I've see a slightly honed balancer hub used to center things up.

Is that just as over-rated?

I was going to say something about it the last video but I figured you would remember it yourself also you might as well do some mods to the oil pump to increase oil flow while you're at it all it'll cost is elbow grease

Doesn't hurt to do it but these engines will run several hundred thousand miles with no oil pump problems if you don't. I guess there is a slight power gain by not having the lobes dragging as much.

Sometimes on the comment sections they're brutal, other times they're helpful, lol.

U don't hv to use feeler gauges. That important step is not needed. If u watch Cal from Melling he will teach u easier faster way. I didn't use feeler gauges. I followed Cal from melling so much easier and faster. My ls runs 45lb hot idle and 60-70 2500 rpm. No more feeler gauge that's old news. Follow Cals procedure.

It is overrated. Oil pump clearance. Never check it. Only thing was good was oil pick up tube o-ring. I always use the oil pump tube brace which sandwich the tube with 2 bolts and brace.
