Good video.
Thanks for sharing.
I build most of our oil pumps.
I use M55 replacement pumps rather than M55hv's most of the street engines don't need the high volume oil pumps, in my opinion.
We boost the oil pressure and deburr.
Been doing this for 40 plus years.
Important to clean out new pumps and make sure the pressure relief valve is cleaned and lubricated.
Make sure it moves freely.
Thanks for sharing.
Take care, Ed.

You can silver-braze the pickup tube to the cast iron very easily with a propane or map torch. The braze is quite strong for this application, and there is no danger of melting holes in the thin tube. Just be sure to apply braze flux evenly to the joint area before heating. Apply most heat to the casting area until it begins to show dull red, then feed the braze solder to the joint. It only takes a small amount of braze wire. You can practice the technique on scrap copper pipe and fittings using tin based solder and flux. Thanks for the tips.

Years ago I had a Ford 460 rebuilt, slightly cammed with slightly more compression. I also had a HV oil pump installed and I think that was a mistake. The engine ran fine, but the pump's attempt to push more oil simply resulted in high oil pressure all the time. I too wondered about stress on the cam gear and distributor shaft. There was no issue for as long as I owned it, but I think that a stock pump would have worked just fine for my application [in a truck, towing my camper].

Just as my own technique, rather than relying on a tack weld, which of course takes a welder, or just the press fit, I smear a very thin coat of JB Weld on the tube before pressing it in. Works like a charm and anybody can do it.

Been doing this for 30 years ... great tech for the young people also I see you did the rear main bearing cap yes this man knows all the tricks ... don't under estimate his diy build people

Great tip! Essentially blueprinting the pump. We do this all the time with Air Cooled VW motors.

A good friend of mine, Bruce Chenault, invented the oil pickup locking bracket. I took several to Peterson Publishing in Cali, way back in the 90s. Sadly, he never reaped any financial gains from his design, even though it is simplistic, failsafe, and brilliant. Sad to see him pass away, before it really caught on. Godspeed Bruce...

I have done this mod on the turn where the oil is drawn into the gears for years. I also like to smooth the outlet port to get the burrs out for an undisturbed oil flow. Great informative video.

Thank You sir for the educational as well as informative video. Every little modification we can perform on engines can help. Keep up the good videos and Have A Good Day! 🛻🚚🚛

Videos like this is what keeps me coming back to youtube. Thanks.

You can either gas braze it or Tig braze it with dissimilar bronze rods

Good, simple information for a better pump with no cost, just some time.

SBC never needs a h/v pump. Factory high presure pump [55 psi] used on all 350s on suffice and does not load up the gear on the cam. I have run 7500 for 2200 racing kms with 55 psi and the bearings were like new. I have seen 327s with OEM pump run at 8500 in the 70s. All that with 35psi. And they lived fine. 50 grade oil. These days most are using 5w30 which pumps so much easier.
Brazing the pickup is a good idea. Imperative? If fitted correctly they seldom cuase an issue. When butchered in then they can fall out or suck air as well,

With good clearances and a stock oil pan, a stock or high pressure is best. Pressure requirement is based on RPM with a basic rule of thumb being 8 lbs plus 8 lbs per 1, 000 RPM. Stockcar engines I built running 6, 000 had 55 - 65 lbs hot at top rpm, 20 - 30 at idle running 10W-30 or 40 synthetic.

High volume also requires a deeper sump. If you are moving more oil, the level can get low enough to allow a vortex to form, like in a sink draining, which allows the pump to suck air, so you want lots of oil above the pickup. A rectangular pickup also helps prevent a vortex.

The extra oil enhances oil cooling as well.

How about pressure balancing the gears& i take & block sand with 600 wet or dry end plate & pump mating surface .

The pump body is cast steel not cast iron. That’s why you can successfully weld the PU tube in place.

I agree it's sketchy to try to weld steel to C.I. But I have brazed that joint & it seemed to work quite nicely.

Nice video, can I ask how you can test the pump, or identify it's bad. Thank you.

What about just changing out the 4 bolt end cap by putting your old cap on the new pump?
