Beatrix Potter, renowned for her delightful children's books, has an intriguing family history, linking her to Catherine, Princess of Wales. Her iconic character, Peter Rabbit, was born in this very house in the picturesque village of Near Sawrey, Cumbria. Hill Top Farm, purchased with the profits from her books, became her artistic retreat. The house's slate roof and stone walls are quintessential examples of Lakeland's vernacular architecture. Beatrix even built an extension to accommodate her farm manager, John Cannon, and his family, learning farm management from him.

At 39, Beatrix sought solace at Hill Top after the sudden death of her fiancé, Norman Warne. Their love story inspired the 2006 film Miss Potter, starring Renée Zellweger and Ewan McGregor. Beatrix poured her grief into transforming Hill Top, meticulously planning its gardens and interiors. Her designs drew inspiration from the renowned British horticulturist Gertrude Jekyll and the Arts & Crafts movement, creating a romantic, chaotic, yet charming garden.

Beatrix's garden is a delightful mix of old-fashioned flowers, herbs, vegetables, and fruit. Roses, honeysuckle, foxgloves, and lavender fill the garden with color and fragrance. A portion of the garden dedicated to fruit and vegetables attracts local wildlife, much like the characters in her stories. The green-painted gate in her vegetable garden became a beloved illustration in her books.

Step inside Hill Top to experience its cozy and welcoming interiors. The entrance hall retains its original stone-flagged flooring, and the walls are adorned with wallpaper identical to those Beatrix hung in 1906. The house features a collection of 18th-century furniture and a beautiful porcelain collection. The rooms are filled with personal touches, like the doll's house from "The Tale of Two Bad Mice" and a four-poster bed dating back to the mid-1600s.

Beatrix's life turned positive when she married solicitor William Heelis in 1913. The couple moved into Castle Cottage on Castle Farm, but Hill Top remained her working studio. Her passion for preserving the Lake District's natural beauty led her to purchase Castle Farm, adding to her conservation legacy.

Though Beatrix didn't have children, she was deeply involved in her community, particularly in breeding Herdwick sheep. In 1923, she bought Troutbeck Park, restoring it to agricultural health and becoming a prominent Herdwick breeder.

Today, Hill Top is meticulously maintained by the National Trust. Visitors can experience the same serene atmosphere Beatrix cherished. The house now displays some of her original watercolors, adding to the magic of visiting this historic site. Remember to book your tickets in advance to explore this charming home and its delightful gardens.

Hill Top's beauty and charm have made it a beloved destination for visitors worldwide, particularly from Japan. A replica of Hill Top was even created in a children's zoo in Tokyo, reflecting Beatrix Potter's enduring global influence. Her stories, first translated into Japanese in 1917, continue to captivate audiences.

Beatrix Potter's legacy lives on in the enchanting homes and gardens she created, inspiring future generations.

Charming. What a dreadfully rude thing Kate did auctioning off such a special gift. Where were her manners. She could surely given them to an art gallery for others to enjoy. BUT TO SELL A GIFT ?? ?
