Jeff Salzenstein, Former top 100 ATP Player and USTA High-Performance Coach, demonstrates the simple difference between the slice and kick serve. He explains how the amount of topspin, slice or kick that you get is directly related to the angle of the racquet at contact.

He also mentions the importance of adjusting the ball toss in relation with your body to create a different angle at contact. Keep in mind that your technique and shoulder turn are key foundations to hit better kick, slice, and flat tennis serves.

Is the grip for a kick serve differ from the grip of a slice serve?

I literally didn't get this until you displayed the image in an image showing the two arrows when you said 'angle'. I was like 'Angle to what?'. Now I get it. The angle of the racquet to your arm. Makes sense. Thank you. (p.s. went back and watched it the 2nd time and you actually say what I missed the first time at 1:41 so yeah, I'm just a dope)

Thanks for the video. I would to disguise my second serve better between the slice and kicker. Any suggestions? Thanks.

A visual aid of where the returner located and their height would be very interesting ti see. A coach once put a ladder with a marker at 6 feet high on the base line in order to give us a visual of how high our kick serve was going. Also used it to show us a direct line from serving at the base line to the service box line. Real informative

Jeff, good one, thanks, but I have to ask you to explain on what spot of the ball should be contacted a racquet. You propose for slice serve to contact on 11 o’clock for lefty, but some tennis experts recommend - on 7 o’clock. Which one is better?

Excellent refresher. I noticed that both serves shown had significant pace. I can hit a kick with a pretty good bounce, but I'd also like to get a bit more pace. I'm thinking that it might be my toss, which is pretty much above my head. Can you demonstrate the toss on both serves that shows the difference (assuming there is one) and how to get more pace on the kick serve?

How to get more speed and bounce on the kick. I have served kicks about the speed of your demo and the players I play with, hit destructive returns, then I have to resort to hitting two first serves (Sampras mindset) but too risky.

is there any way to mirror youtube video without using real mirror. I'm right handed.

I know it’s an odd request but can you the server use the right arm? I look at the lesson but I don’t see “me” a right handed player. I am not Rafa.

Jeff, doesn’t that simply mean that the contact height should be lower on topspin serve, hence the angle?

Need some slow motions to see the difference..
