2.5 years ago most of us thought that we would have 4680 Tesla’s that had greater range than 2170 versions, and would be less expensive. That has not panned out - yet.

Just want to note, it's safe to charge to 100% it's programed to not fully charge to protect degradation until needed as battery ages.

My only problem with the structural pack is that it's not serviceable in any way. Which means you can't repurpose part of it for use it in EV conversions or stationary storage.
Not that you necessarily would want to replace modules in a defective pack anyway as degradation matching can be tough, but at least you have that option on 2170/18650 packs.
If there's a problem with the 4680 pack, the whole thing is headed for the shredder to be recycled, which will end up costing a lot more to replace, and is the least favorable of the R's in Reduce/Reuse/Recycle.
All the upsides of the 4680 hold true though if it never has problems, which may be worth the tradeoff.

These 4680s are not untapped charge speed wise yet. Just look at the history of tesla and new packs. Long range came out with a 150kW peak and then was later increased to 250kW. SR was introduced at 100kW peak and later increased to 180kW.

Just bought a MYLR. I wish we could get the MYSR with dual motor AWD using the LFP battery. Even though the LFP are less energy dense they love to be at 100% SOC compared to ~80% standard lithium ion and they tolerate many more charge cycles. The 4680 is not (so far) proving to be a better battery in terms of performance. It’s about 9% less energy dense than the 2170 cells.

The recession and legacy auto focus on PHEV, means cell material costs should fall. Tesla should benefit from lower cost of goods sold, better processes with lower costs, and the ability to direct cells to constrained products like Powerwall, mega pack and semi. Margins may fall some. But growth should be achieved.

If you superglue an empty 6 pack of alum cans between two boards you will see the stiffness is much greater compared to what using 2170 size cans could achieve for the same contact area. See: Sandy Munro vs the pink pack. Still I would go for the Blade Battery LiFePO4.

At 0°f, I'm wondering what the difference is in preheating and charging time with 4680 vs 2170? Any battery pack has a huge mass and takes a long time to raise the temperature. I wondering with fewer and more massive cells, how does this effect cold charging?

The 4680 model Y standard range should should cost about $7, 000-10, 000 less than the 2170 model Y standard range. Elon stated the 4680’s are much cheaper to produce.

I took delivery of my GigaTexas long range Model Y on December 27. When I talked to the service center they told me that they had to replace the hatch. Other than this, the build quality is great.

These 2 cars drive much differently because of the giga cast I think. I drove both back to back and the 4680 car felt much more solid, quieter and softer over bumps. I could tell a difference so drive them both. 4680 just feels better as he says

There is just no way Tesla is eliminating modules and glueing the pack into a single structural part of the car if they are not sure they have achieved a significant advance in battery longevity. I feel very confident that the 4680 Y has the million mile battery pack Tesla has been after, or will soon but already has a pack that will last a lot longer than the 2170.

Also, if the Cybertruck with 4680 can charge on the Megachargers, someone is sandbagging the 4680 Y charging speeds.

Finally, the dual gigacastings 4680.Y is going to be safer in a crash than the 2170. The battery pack is like having a row of steel girders underneath the passenger compartment.

Hi John,
As a software architect, I can tell u that things like models and prices are never embedded/hard coded in the source code. They are retrieved dynamically from a back end database upon loading the design studio web page.
This kind of information would only be available if someone hacked the database.

In November I took delivery of a Fremont build Model Y long range. Build quality was outstanding. No paint, gap, or any issues. In my very limited experience, build quality will be a wash!

One key factor of the 4680 cell is overlooked. That battery is rated 2 million miles. That means resale value will be super super high compared to the 2170. Which is good if you're looking for used 2170 when 4680 comes out.
