I love the image of an old director scolding Quentin Tarantino.

Stuff like this is so important because it shows younger filmmakers that even the best in the world grew to where they are now, and it’s okay to admit when you’re learning.

More this, less Andrew Tate please, algorithm gods.
Edit: Wow! 8.3k likes! Glad to see there are still sane people out there.

What I’ve found is that subtext comes later. When you’re writing your script, if you don’t already know the subtext don’t bother thinking about it, just focus on the story and completing it. After you write it though, you start to realize things about the story that you never saw before. I’m coming to end of production on my first film, and I’ve only recently come to see what the real subtext of the story is.

This is why it’s important to do things before you know how to do it completely. You learn most things by doing them

This misses the end of the story where he said he realised it didn't matter and never thought about it again

I think it’s amazing how our brains make these connections

Tarantino both inspires me and discourages me to write

That’s amazingly true. Subtext is what the characters are thinking and not actually saying. It’s what goes on in the back of the mind while we try to get our point across without saying what we really mean. I knew I enjoyed his work for a reason. Good stuff.

This interview is more important than any others he’s done I’ve watched.

In this same interview, he says he did the subtext exercise once and never again 😆

No, no, no. You can't leave this clip up like this because writers will believe he's saying "Do this" when he's NOT. The whole story is that he did not use Subtext in the end because he thought it was a cool exercise but not something he would ever do again

These clips have been popping up on my feed and I've got to thank you. They've been helping me with my writing so much. I've been trying to write for so long and always ended up hating it, for the first time I've actually started to like my writing.

I've studied Reservoir Dogs for years and Mr. Tarantino is totally accurate about Mr. Tarantino's best work of art.

I was really waiting for him to say at the end the subtext was he wanted to go the hospital and the other didn’t and that’s what he wanted the audience to get from that scene 🤣

You can't have a good film without any subtext. Because that's how we get into the minds of characters and learn things we might not even know about ourselves in the subtext of our lives
