Using pie charts is not the end of the world

Rules like “avoid pie charts” can be useful for beginners, but also unhelpful in real-world scenarios with more nuance. Instead of learning rules about “how”, try to understand the “why”.

Great video and tips Kurt! Best part of this video was the bonus story time. As much as I want to create top down, I force myself to needs assess w stakeholders. You said it best during the video, the users should be empowered storytellers, pie or not, they need to connect w it first.

While I do agree that pie charts are sensible to be used to highlight the (rough) relative size of a subset of things (maybe even two if it is really sensible), I don't see if for donut charts. The big advantage of pie charts is that humans can easily identify 90° and 180° angles so you can easily tell if something makes up 25%, 50% or 75% or are slightly above or below these values. Pie charts are perfect to roughly assess where you are with one KPI/measurement/value given the total. Donut charts cannot do even this easily. Donut charts really do not have any particular advantage. Hence, there is always a better visual to replace a donut chart
