Spring Pruning For Hydrangea Macrophylla 'Zebra' March 5, 2022

This is a new variety of Hydrangea Macrophylla that blooms on both old and new wood. Regardless of how it is pruned, it will flower.
First Hydrangea that is actively growing. Note, the blooms should be white, hence the name "Zebra" - white flower with black stems. However, it blooms a bright rich blue. Unexpected but a pleasant surprise.
Last year, I have deadhead most of the spent blooms prior to winter. This year, I address the shape first, then size. Then, remove weak/dead and crossed branches. More shaping before I am done. For mature plants remove one fifth of the old stems from the base to rejuvenate. I have remove quite a number of older branches during shaping so I did not remove more just for the sake of rejuvenating.
