Compressors don't just affect gain, but also tonality, and can be used as an eq, to differentiate the tonality at say, the start or end of a drum sound. There is way more to hear in compression than just gain changes, difference in dynamic range and shaping of transients

Also good thing to know about attack: it's actually the speed that compression achieves full ratio after passing the threshold. Attack is 50ms = it takes that much time for a compressor to go from 1:1 to x:1 ratio after signal goes exceeds the threshold.

Listen at a moderate volume so that it is below the threshold of the physical compressor in your middle-ear.
