Regardless of how people feel about the age gap, their love is quite clearly romantic. And I will list all the evidence:
Firstly, Claudia is very clearly her father figure. Not Gilbert. Throughout both the show and movie he shows fatherly behaviour. He buys violet the soft toys when she is discharged, he buys her the dress and gets her brooch back. He is protective of her and he concealed the truth about Gilbert because he didnt want to hurt her. He then goes after her when she does find out and he comforts her like a father would. Then there is the iconic moment in the movie when he calls Gilbert and idiot for breaking her heart. He is also hesitant about Dietfried when it is implied in the movie that he has some affection for her too. Violet also tell him he doesnt need to be overprotective of her. In contrast, Gilbert never acts fatherly besides from teaching her to read and write. He also reacts to her like someone in love. Both when she compliments his eyes and when she asks him what the feeling is she gets when looking at the brooch. Also when he is talking to her about things someone like her would want he looks at two girls who are clearly older, suggesting he views her as older too. Just a normal girl who deserved to experience beautiful things. Then there is the fact that violet explores both familial AND romantic love. It is important that she learns about both so she can understand the love Gilbert feels for her. If their love was only familial then there would be no need to explore both.
There is also the age gap between Charlotte and Damian to be considered. We know its ten years and that Charlotte is only 14. Yet it is perfectly acceptable in their universe. So is Violet and Gilbert really a stretch? I dont think so. Violet even states in that episode that she doesn't think love has an age limit.
Also Violet clearly ages in the time we see. You can tell by her height and also the maturity in her face. Especially in the movie compared to the series. She is quite clearly of age by the time she is reunited with Gilbert. It is also mentioned multiple times by Dietfried that years have passed since the war.
Also it is heavily implied that the man in the post office at the end of the movie is their son. Not only does he have Violets doll badge, but he also has her typewriter, her ribbon tied outside on the tree and he also does the signature thumbs up and smile that Violet learns how to do at the start of the movie. It is all very clear evidence. Just hard to accept because our legal age and views on relationships are different to Japan's.

Here you have people so in love with a movie about the love story between a 14 year old soldier and a 29 year old major.

Violet evergarden is a COMPLETELY fictitious piece, not based on any real event. It has traces of obviously real occurrences in it such as war, however it is completely made up. The author intentionally made her that age. It was not a reflection of the life of any specific person. She made her a child when she didn't have to, and wrote the relationship between them with a very clear, deep flourishing romantic connection (so cut the crap with the no labels bs.) Normal back in the day does not = okay. And even bringing history into it (even though this is not based on any historical event once again) it was very common even then for people in similar age to fall in love and marry each other. The fact that it was supposed to be released in 2020 is a crucial thing. What happened here was not a depiction of the crudeness that actually was the reality of child brides in the implicated times of violet evergarden. As a matter of fact, it was a complete disregard of the realities. They were discarded effectively, and instead a beautifully depicted flourishing tragic love story where the connection between the two is not blemished by current day morality when we KNOW things like that are wrong was written. That is an issue and any person who studies history would have a visceral reaction to the statements that this was okay back then and reflective of the earlier days. And here is the most vile part:

The relationship was very intentionally written to explore, dissect and relate a deep connection between two people which on any glace one would immediately assume is romantic. But because she is so young it was clear the writers and animators adjusted it slightly to portray as deep and meaningful as possible without hard confirming that he felt so romantically about her or had any sexual implications, that way the view of the relationship is left up to the viewer. The little amounts of disgusting romantic affections were rubbed out to avoid ridicule, but the book relates it all.

This is nothing but sick. Like I mentioned it is NOT in ANY WAY reflective of the reality of the romantic relations of children in her time. It is made up. People who defend and like this anime to such a degree wonderfully show a very disturbing side of themselves. I love it, because it shows exactly who to keep your kids away from. Just another reason why anime watchers are some of the most disgusting people on earth. Give them something they like enough and no matter what is happening, they will defend it to the end.

i swearrr.... out of all the animes out there and the couples ... this is the BEST.... to hell with those who have an issue with the age gap .... let me clear, this is NORMAL... not for the 21st century but since the beginning of time... as long as both are adults... no issue
