When Will Newcastle Win The Premier League?

Newcastle United surged into the world of Champions League football after an exhilarating second season under Eddie Howe. After strengthening the squad by bringing in young, key signings including Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes, Newcastle seemed ready to reach new heights at the start of this season.

But, the Toon find themselves languishing in midtable alongside Chelsea and Wolves. Results aren’t turning in their favour and injuries continue to plague their squad.

What can Newcastle do to turn their fortunes?

Chris Hamill, JJ Bull and Jon Mackenzie are joined by Jacob Whitehead, The Athletic’s Newcastle reporter, to figure out when Newcastle will be able to win the Premier League.

This is The Athletic’s Week in Football.

Do not fear. The physio has cleared Joe Devine for a return next week. But what a pleasure it was to come to you in non-short form! 🤝

This is the spiritual successor to the Tifo Football Podcast.

Glad to see the Hamster, that dirty dog, heading up a panel like this. I like Joe's energy when he's not too over the top, but Hamill's a great pivot for this team.

Chris appearing on Tifo is what I had hoped for since his Football Daily days!

As a big FD fan, really nice to see Hamill still smashing it at the Athletic. Fully deserved

I used to be buzzing when we’d sign Marlon Harewood and would finish 12th. The fact we’ve had a brutal run of injuries, more games than Eddie and the team are used to but we’re still in with a shout of Europe is amazing.

I’ll be happy if we win the league once in my lifetime.

I ❤ JJ’s rants. There should definitely be a JJ shortform content of just his rants. 😆

not a Newcastle fan, but found this video very informative. I enjoyed how it went into detail from squad building to tactics.

WHAT A TREAT a little bit of Chris Hamill. Had always hoped he’d transition into a regular onscreen role. Hope this is the start of something

Injuries are always mentioned in these things, but I can't emphasise enough just how much they've ruined us this season. In my 35 years supporting the club I've never known a season come anywhere near to how bad and strange it's been this season. It's tempting to say 'well injuries aside...' but injuries have pretty much defined our season. Aside from muscle injuries we've had 2 shoulder dislocations, 3 ACLs, 2 broken backs (!), a broken toe, 3 hamstrings, 3 groins, 2 achillies, a torn pec and all of them have been months out rather than weeks and it's still happening now, it's never stopped. Oh yeah, and a 10 month gambling ban.

Gordon, Bruno, and Schar are the only players who've not been out for more than a couple of weeks.

We've had some great matches, PSG, Man United, Chelsea, Sunderland and a few others, but most Newcastle fans I know wanted the season to end by Christmas, it's been really hard.

A average of 11 players out through injury each game (so far this season) is a little more than a bit unlucky. There was multiple games in a row were Newcastles bench had a couple of kids (one was 15 years old), two goalkeepers, a old age pensioner, and a player Howe refused to use for some strange reason. Take that many players out of even liverpool or Arsenals squad for large periods and they would also struggle massively, and those teams have a way better squad than we could ever dream of. Some of our bad form is on Eddie Howe, but the majority stems from the worst injury crisis ive ever seen in the premier league ever.

I can’t get used to these thumbnails. I’d always look out for these, but they just look like any other athletic pod video

This season will be remembered as ‘the season with injuries’ - simple as.
The injuries need to be addressed as it an effect that become compounded ie each new injury creates more stress on the existing players. Also, fifty per cent of the starters against city were pre take over players.

These videos are absolutely brilliant content, thanks guys. Watched all of your team run-downs and would happily watch analysis of every team in the league.
