Australia’s Qantas Airways has broken the record for the world’s longest nonstop commercial passenger flight: 19 hours and 16 minutes. NBC’s Tom Costello, the only American broadcast reporter aboard, joins TODAY from Sydney, Australia, to reveal what it was like to fly there from New York – 10,000 miles without a stop.

It's not really a true test if everyone is seated in first class. Put several "test subjects" back in economy and see how they endure 19 hours.

“Wait. We gotta fly 19 hours back.”

Yeah easy to feel “alright” when the plane is not even to 1/3 capacity and no babies on board either 👶

“I’ve been awake 22 hours.”

Those are rookie numbers.

Only fifty passengers and no screaming kids to cope with.

They should've gotten a crying baby to get the full experience.

I really struggle to fall asleep on planes. This flight would be a real nightmare for me.

Oh, I'm sure everyone's gonna love a plane full of macarena. 19-hour brawl ensues.

Very long flights I've done include SFO to Hong Kong, SFO to Sydney, LAX to Melbourne, and LAX to Dubai, and all of them in economy. While not comfortable, it's doable. My main suggestion is to reserve yourself an aisle seat, so you can get up when you want without disturbing anybody.

19h in Business, with a flat bed seat like that sounds fine to me. So far my longest flight have been 13h Krabi-Helsinki but in Economy, not fun...

Here's a little more info about this project. They plan to have SYD to JFK flights and SYD to LHR flights by 2025. The project is called Project Sunrise. They used the 787-9 for this flight, however only 50 people could board as the Dreamliner isn't really capable flying those distances with a full load. This flight was a research flight which was conducted to monitor crew and passenger wellbeing, not so much the capability of the aircraft. This is test flight 1 of 3. As tempting as it would be to sleep as soon as you board, the idea of flicking into Sydney's time is to make sure you reduce jetlag when you land. Passengers on this flight reported feeling much better when landing in Sydney after the direct flight, rather than JFK - LAX - SYD. Also if you're thinking about making the trip across to Sydney, I'd highly recommend it. The flight is the smallest part of your holiday to Australia, even if it does seem daunting. We would love to have you visit.

Why would anyone travel 19 hours?

Take advantage of stopovers ;-) and see the world.

They have a nice place to sleep, delicious food and with screen entertainment, I don't think the 19 hours flight is a big deal.
