awesome idea those hot potatoes too warm you up !
i still have from my military service those hand warmer that use zippo fuel with a coton filament inside that burn without flame like a coal with some hole on the cover, and it radiate heat for hours, it works great you can also use it in a pocket of your jacket or shoes or sleepingbag...
the forest around you looks magical with all that snow and frosty crystral on trees.

So cool, it's like winter trying to tell you that i never wanted the leaves to fall in anticipation of it's arrival and trying to make up for it in white leaf like splendor.

A good way to stay warm when it's freezing outside, is to stay inside in front of the fireplace with a hot choco to boost ! works for me ;) ... barring that, a low tech way to heat your fingers is to get your arm on the inside of your jacket and then tucking your fingers under your armpits.

I was recently introduced to something called a hot pack. It has some sort of powder inside, coal I guess. It's cold when you unwrap it. But once you start shaking it, it magically becomes hot (advertised as 70 degrees C). It usually stays warm for 1-2 days. I'm honestly not sure how it works, but it reminds me of that instant food warming kit you get inside of an MRE. They're really useful though. Especially in this surprisingly cold and snowy South Korean winter. :)

Love it! I should add potatoes to my winter adventure kit. Gotta be cold if you all are wrapped up! My favorite way is layering during the day since movement will keep you warm for the most part. A hot water bottle or rock ar night for my feet. I will try the "hot potato" for sure though! With love my friend 🙂

I have a little case in which pieces of coal can be burnt. This isn't super low tech, because the inner insulation is made of glass fiber, but it's extremly eco-friendly. In it a little piece (maybe 20g) of high quality coal is burned over a time of 2-4 hours. Because it can be worn directly at the body, almost all of the generated heat is going to be absorbed by the body, which leads to a great efficiency. The rechargeable chemical heatpacks fail against it because they break to quickly and charging is very inefficient. With electric ones it's difficult to compare.

The potato and rock trick is nice when you have a fire or an oven going anyways. In this case you can heat them up very efficiently. And of course the production causes no pollution

I remember doing this with hard boiled eggs in the cold mornings. Great way to start your day with warm hands and a happy stomach.

Cool idea! I love roasted potatoes! But I rarely need mittens or gloves because 1) I currently live most of the time in a region where we have snow only for a few days or weeks a year (I miss it!!!) and 2) I have discovered a technique to heat my hands an feet by kind of directing my blood flow somehow... I found this out accidentally and over the time it became easier for me. It does of corse work better when I'm generally feeling warm and when I'm moving. I'm not sure if this does work at all when I'm really freezing... maybe not. On a tour with a dog sled with snowing and quite some wind with warm clothes (and a good breakfast) I din't need any gloves for some hours and felt very comfortable. If I use gloves, they should have a wind shield or be water tight, that's most important for me.
I'm sure you use such methods a lot too! Would be very interesting to hear about your experiences!! Unfortunately I don't know someone who also uses this.

Before watching; is it heated stones?
Not so far off. This can be put inside clothes, sleepingbags or shoes to warm them up before you get up in the morning.

Rocks can do the same thing if you're warming them up like that. And personally if I had to pick one exploding item over the other exploding item I think I would take the potato it's softer. But both can be very dangerous.
