Moving In - Pop!_OS 19.04 Review

From System76 comes the recent update to Pop!_OS 19.04 which obviously gets all the same benefits as Ubuntu 19.04 - except this one convinced me to switch from Fedora 29. Will it be enough to keep here though?

I have Pop OS on an Apple Mac Pro 2008 and it's absolutely delightful. Hardware worked out of the box bar the Wifi, but it even asked me if I wanted to download the Broadcom driver for that. Smooth and responsive. Top marks!

You can take the Google+ link out of your description. Google told consumers to get lost on April 2nd.

I'd like to say I really like the way you review distros. Thanks for your work!

Pop is quality. In addition to the points you mention I also found that it did a very good job of power saving and thermal control on a laptop, better than most other distributions including the various *buntus. Another great video...thanks!

That font makes me feel like I'm using an old Samsung Android phone with a third party font.

I've been using PopOS for the last four better than any other Linux I've used. I'm using 18.04 right now.

Former Canonical employee here. After I left, I felt *free* to try other desktops and was shocked to discover how far KDE has come. It's even faster and has less memory overhead than unity/gnome. That's what I use now and I couldn't be happier. Concerning your HW support argument. Canonical has "hardware enablement ppas" that bring the entire stack backwards to supported releases so I have hard time understanding how PopOS could be doing a "better job" than Canonical, because hardware enablement is where they spend the bulk of their time.

Frankly after experiencing the KDE Plasma desktop I asked myself why we even bothered with creating Unity to begin with.

Finally a techtuber touched upon the AWESOME hardware support of PopOS. A lot of the others seemed to take spending hours on configuring Nvidia driver for granted, which should never be the case!

Pop has been my go to since the first release. I keep coming back to it after distro hopping.

Very nice as soon as I get my new motherboard and memory I'm gonna install popos I'm done with windows for gaming since I have been gaming on my ps4 and found out it's running Linux for it's os and haven't even crashed at all then I should have similar experience with my PC. Can't wait. 😁

Good review. I installed this on the laptop of someone close to me who'd had enough of windows "updates" breaking things.
Quirkiness is cool lol. Everything works fine 5 months in.
I'd second your point about the efi partition mess with the installer. I feel PopOS could improve the partitioning side of things where their installer is concerned, other distros have got it right (MX...)
Otherwise it's a good choice, and this is coming from someone who "hates" Gnome due to all the tweaks one has to do to make it usable (don't get me started on window min/max, lol).

One distro I actually feel like working on. It's built for productivity.

thanks for this video; it was very helpful. I'm a mac user looking to switch to linux and while I'm fairly comfortable with bash, I don't really want to spend time figuring out how to get drivers and apps installed, so this distro looks like it might be the way to go for me. The interface also seems very intuitive and familiar. Did I understand right that system76 will push updates whenever new drivers are available?

The Gnome ui (personally) i find it more suitable for touch screens based devices it shines even more on tablets.

Nice. I'm definitely interested in having a dedicated Linux machine and this distro is appealing. I think there is definitely a class of users who would like out-of-the-box Linux without a lot of fuss: web developers who don't want to use a Mac. Web developers want to get their web development work done, not futz around endlessly with Linux distros. Web development is best done on a UNIX-based OS as it relies so much on open source tools that are generally easier to configure and install on non-Windows OSes. Microsoft is trying to address this problem with WSL, but it still isn't enough, and using WSL creates additional complexity. Of course most people in this situation will choose a Mac, but there are reasons not to choose a Mac. First, I like powerful desktop computers, not laptops. I want lots of screen real estate and lots of memory, and I don't want to have to pay $20K for a Mac Pro to get it. And finally there's Docker, which runs best on Linux than it does on either Windows or Mac, and that's a big benefit to going with Linux.

I recently tried the LIVE versions of Fedora 30 and Pop OS 19.04 on USB and I have to say the feel and responsiveness of Pop OS was hands down better than Fedora. It still uses a lot of RAM but flies like a bird!

Hi, will you tell me about the music at the end? I really like it. The video is really good, too. I read an article saying PopOS has a nice backup application built in. Backup on Linux seems like it should be more well developed at this point. Timeshift is really good, thought it wants you to use a live boot stick to do "system" restorations. Restoring to home has been painless, but they want to see Timeshift as a system backup tool. It's just too good not to use for home files. Cheers.

I installed Pop!_OS 19.04 last week. Immediately, I liked its default theme and wallpapers. But being new to the whole Linux environment, it felt like my Ubuntu 18.04 installation was more stable. Although they are undeniably similar to each other, with Ubuntu at their core, there are things I just couldn't overlook. Among other things, there are noticeable stutters when playing games that I didn't encounter on Ubuntu. And there seemed to be no way to mute minor sound effects when adjusting the volume.

So I went back and reinstalled Ubuntu 18.04 with Pop!_OS theme, fonts, and wallpaper.

Anyone who's on Ubuntu - dont think twice. This distro works better and looks better. Blazing fast, stable, eye candy. Amazing
