US slaps new tariffs on Canadian lumber

The United States has fired the first shot in a possible trade war with its second largest trading partner, Canada.

The US government says it’s planning to impose tariffs, averaging 20 percent, on Canadian softwood lumber.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he will vigorously defend the softwood lumber industry.

I remember the NAFTA negotiations and I don't remember Canada getting the advantage of the US. As I recall, the US seemed and still does think Canada and Mexico exist to serve the USA. And no, that's not a trading partnership.

A 37% price increase for wood sold to the USA is forthcoming for Canada, primarily due to supply shortages caused by wildfires.

We don't care if the US tariffs softwood, it is the US homebuyer that will pay it. Any drop off in sales can easily be taken up by increasing our sales to China and Europe. No big deal.

whats good for the gander is good for the goose. Canada taxes everything I export to them though we don't tax what they ship to us. shipments take a month or more to do any transaction with Canada customers. Then they complain about their country stopping the shipments and the heavy tariffs imposed . they want me to violate the law and ship as a gift. I see this as payback until they remove all tariffs on US goods shipments too.
