Professor Sophie Scott offers a neurological and psychological point of view on the often surprising science and evolution of laughter and its role in social interactions and emotional management. She talks about why we laugh, the impact of laughing on individual well-being and her work on what makes jokes funny.

Sophie Scott is a professor of cognitive neuroscience and a speech communication leader. Her research investigates the cognitive neuroscience of voices, speech and laughter, particularly speech perception, speech production, vocal emotions and human communication. She is known for her public engagement work, including performing stand-up comedy. Combining this with her academic study of the science of laughter, Professor Scott has a uniquely insightful view as to what makes people laugh.

This festival is in support of the World Health Organization to support COVID-19 response efforts.

Don’t wait around for others to experience life with you. Take the lead, go out, and get the most out of life. Eventually, you’ll have more company than you can handle.

Why is laughter funny? Why do we get "helpless with laughter"? More like an animal call than speech, laughter is universal and serves many purposes. Prof Sophie Scott's talk is wonderful and enlightening, informative, and, dare I say? often funny
