Why I'm Downsizing My Fish Room - Fish Room update Ep. 120

‎ Cory's fish room has gone through lots of changes since his last update. A whole row of totes are gone, he got new fish for his living room tank, and lots of fish are being sold off at the Aquarium Co-Op retail store. His 2023 goals include making his tanks more self-sustainable so he can enjoy them without having to do a ton of maintenance all the time. That's why he is downsizing the number of aquariums he owns and continuing to make adjustments to his work/life balance.

Yes, I love that you show the tanks when they’re in their best shape and also when they’re at their normalest! Most hobbyists deal with all of these annoyances and it’s so great to see it normalized on this channel AND hear how it can be fixed up, or how tweaks can be made to prevent that. Creating self sustaining ecosystems is, in my opinion, the best part of this hobby. I’ve been in a bit of an aquarium slump for a while - kinda lost the excitement, but I’m trying to come back to it because I miss it. Like you, this has required some honest talks with myself and a little bit of downsizing, too.

I think it's so important to understand our limits. I downsized last year from 3 tanks to 1 and it's been so much better for me. It's easier to keep up on maintenance and actually enjoy my fish!

I appreciate your candid approach to fish keeping, thanks for bringing this to a human level! I have gotten so many great ideas to try in my own tanks by watching context like this.

I really love the extremely low maintenance aspect of planted tanks. Especially heavier planted so you almost never need to do water changes, no heater, etc.

Thanks for spending your time on stuff for us Cory!

I like that you are scaling back and enjoying the hobby more. That's an awesome (and, for some, difficult) step to take. Best of luck and enjoy nature daily!

Keep doing you, Cory. Whatever that is, whenever, however...it's you, and that's why I'm here. I learn SO much and you inspire me, when I think if you weren't here, I would lose my desire to continue in the hobby. Thank you!

I really enjoyed watching this Corey. It made me feel like there’s somebody out there that “understands “. That it’s hard work but it’s also so rewarding to then sit back and enjoy the benefits of that work.

100% agree. Our tanks are also natural. We have all sorts of critters in them. Worms, planaria, scuds, snails, and of course the fish. The green algae is all over the wood and rocks and it is absolutely gorgeous. I love watching the fish hunt and actually enjoy their environment. It is full of activity and the fish are vibrantly colored and healthy.

I love these kind of videos. Seeing others working on improving their tanks actually motivates me more to work on my own tanks than seeing perfect tanks.

I love these little casual conversation videos, Cory. I can certainly relate to spending so much time doing the things you must do that it severely limits the time you have to do the things you want to do. I really appreciate the tips and advice about ways to help it not be a burden. I've heard similar advice in regards to stuff like project vehicles. If it has sat untouched for a year just doing something as simple as dragging it to a different place in the garage, etc. can reinvigorate your interest and get you re-started on working on it. Same goes for re-scaping a tank or re-designing a fish wall or room, changing the focus of projects and tanks, etc. VERY useful advice. Thank you for letting us in :) Cheers.

I know the educational videos are needed and they probably do the best, but the updates on your hobby are my favorite content to watch.

Thanks for being willing to share the ups and downs!

Cory’s honesty about upkeep and too much being disheartening in the hobby helps me a lot. Thank you for sharing some tips on how to make the hobby easier. I recently simplified my filtration and I find it way less daunting to do maintenance. I now have more time to spend growing my plants better and enjoying my fish.
