Unusual Mentorship Experiences in Dentistry
Hello everyone! In today’s video, I’ll be sharing some bizarre mentorship experiences I've encountered throughout my career as a dentist. If you’ve had similar stories, I’d love to hear about them!
For some background, I’m Khaled, and I’ve been a dentist for 20 years. I run Lakeside Dental Spa in Hervey Bay, Queensland, where I’ve grown my practice from one share to ten and expanded my team from three to forty staff members over the past 14 years.
In this video, I’ll recount three peculiar mentorship experiences that left a lasting impression on me.
First, I’ll describe a mentor I had during my internship. This dentist was highly praised initially, but we quickly noticed a troubling pattern: every patient was diagnosed with maxillary sinusitis and given antibiotics, regardless of their actual dental condition. This approach turned out to be a shortcut for a practitioner who wasn’t fully engaged in proper diagnosis or patient care.
Next, I'll talk about a private practice mentor in Egypt who boasted about advanced technology but delivered questionable results. From claiming that his intraoral camera was connected to a satellite in Germany to using dubious methods for denture creation, this mentor's practices were both misleading and ineffective. Despite our suspicions, local authorities were indifferent to our complaints.
Finally, I’ll share my experience with a mentor in Australia who had over 30 years of dental experience. His unconventional methods, including mixing dental materials in a bizarre way and failing to address significant malpractice issues, were a source of frustration. I ended up correcting his work and replacing it with proper treatments, highlighting the mismatch between his reputed expertise and actual practices.
