Is Trent Alexander-Arnold A Midfielder?

Trent Alexander-Arnold is one of Liverpool’s best playmakers. For the past two season, he has been amongst the highest assisters. He has a range of passing that is unrivalled in his Liverpool team, and maybe even the Premier League. He finds himself in attacking positions more often than defensive ones. And Gareth Southgate has even played him at Centre Midfield for England.

So, is he really a midfielder.

Explained by JJ Bull.

I love that Tifo decided that their illustration of Trent should have an expression of abject horror

JJ always looks like he just got shaken awake from a 4 day drunk and shoved in front of the camera to shoot a video, and that's why he's the one on this channel I trust the most.

one of the reasons why Klopp was playing Elliot so much and why losing him is important is that he is more of a natural winger and is much slicker on the ball than Hendo. So Elliot both be a playmaker if he stays tucked in or he can move out wide and Trent can tuck in and make things happen. You can see this perfectly in Mane's goal against Burnley. Elliot took up a very wide position along the touchline, and Trent tucked in centrally where no defender was looking for him. Van Dijk then played that long diagonal ball out to Elliot who chested it down and ran at the defense. He quickly made that pass central to Trent who dinked it around the corner for Mane to finish. That kind of goal wouldn't happen with Hendo in there because he would have been playing much narrower and not as far forward. That kind of tricky interchanging is more natural to a guy like Elliot and Trent than for Hendo.

I'm pretty sure he was a midfielder in the academy and moved to right-back because it was the easiest way to get into liverpool's first team. That was the time when Nathaniel Clyne got injured

I wonder what if TAA played for Guardiola as an inverted fullback like the way Cancelo played last season 🤔

Seeing teams leave 2 at the back is so satisfying. It's like a full size version of table football.

He mentioned how he wasn't used to how little time he had when Southgate trialed him for the right midfield. Interesting how that translates into touches/90. Being at RB really affords him all the time in the world to pick out his passes

Ppl who doesn't understand the game say he is not a good defender, his primary job is not to defend, it is to create chances.

Hey JJ Bull?…
Could you make a squad overhaul for Barcelona with scout report for most ideal players they can acquire with there budget also who should be sold aging players or without dropping dead logs

Really good video. All I'd add, but it's early days, is he's underlapping a lot more into central areas this season, and then staying there for a long time, leaving Liverpool with almost a back 3 of Matip, VVD & Fabinho. His avg positions map this season is way different to prior seasons, but you pointed out his relationship with Salah changing this year. It's a minor point, but essentially he's often operating as a midfielder with soujourns to RB now, as opposed to the other way around.

I love that bit at the end where he mentioned his defensive weaknesses is over exaggerated. Exactly, he can actually defend well but why bother when he's one of the best on the ball, just have some one cover him.

At Elland Rd last week he spent alot of the time stood in the hole between our RB, CB, DCM and LM

We couldn't handle it

JJ’s proficiency with the interactive board is class now, makes the videos more seamless and really contributes to the quality of the content, not bad for a scot.
