of course you can text and phone without purchasing the internet package but you will be charged because you are using the ships CELLULAR AT SEA service. It will surprise you when you get your monthly bill. I always switched my phone to Airplane Mode to prevent those surprises.

Royal allows you to text to others in ship free through app. If you want to communicate to someone off ship then you often need to get the package. Otherwise especially with a port intensive itinerary just see if your phone service has a partner in that location. Then save it for the port.

Princess Plus comes with WiFi for one device, I think I used it twice on my last cruise.

i personally never get the internet package because i think going on a cruise is a time where i want to spend time with my family (and especially with teenagers) it’s hard to get them off there phones. so for me going on a cruise is one of the only times that my family and i can bond properly and enjoy the moment

I don't pay for wifi because it is included in my fare on Virgin Voyages

I don't buy the package because I want to disconnect. Maybe if my cruises were longer than a week, I might want to, but, with my cell plan, I can communicate on land if I really want to.

Fact: crew DON'T get free wifi either, they have to buy it for the same ridiculous rates🤯🤯

We did iPhone to iPhone texting for free. I could text people on and off the ship with no problem.
