I don't blame the farmers growing poppies. They usually don't have much of a choice, and it's not their fault that there's a demand for it.

Black Market Drug business is booming because of the drug laws and consumption in the United States and other parts of the world. If people were allowed to grow their own opium and make their own medicine like families did two hundred years ago, then we wouldn't have these same set of problems. Education and access to testing their products would enable people to use the medication in a way that is beneficial.
Plus money that goes into the illegal drug trade would be choked off, and people in these countries would not be able to make as much money. At the least, addicts would have access to drugs that had been tested and not stepped on. And it would be possible for them to know how much they were taking. Education can stop people from becoming addicted. And it can teach people how to come off drugs if they become addicted. Drug laws destroy families and allow for organized criminals to thrive. It also allows for more dangerous drugs to enter the market and more people die from overdose. Educating people is far better than teaching them to just say no. Children in the United States who have not been taught to drink responsibly often poison themselves during their freshman year of college. Kids in the United States have stupid drinking games and hazing activities, where the people who can drink the most alchohol are the most highly exalted ones at the party. Young men and women die like this. Alchohol is a drug. Using it should not be raised above the use of other substances. People need to learn about how mixing some drugs with other drugs can become a fatal mistake. And they need to know that chemical substances that have been isolated and concentrated are more addictive than a cocktail of chemicals that can easily be adjusted and controlled, such as opium from a garden. Some people will probably cook up some heroine. But their money won't be going to the Taliban.
