Keys to hitting out of system

When a player is setting an out-of-system ball, where should the outside hitter set up? Coach Tod Mattox trains his hitters to “get big” around 15 to 17 feet off the net, but no further. If the hitter retreats too far from the net, it will be hard to get to a set that’s 5 feet off the net.

He also instructs his hitters to remain calm and quiet with their feet while they’re waiting for the set. Watch the video to learn more!

Most important thing is to maintain the same angle between the line of approach and the line of the set. In normal cases when the setter is at the net the set is going parallell to the net and the approach is gonna be almost perpendicular to that, so about 90 degrees (or even a little bit more). If the out of system set is coming from halfway down the court, the line of the set is gonna be about 45 degrees to the net if the set is going towards the pin. So the approach have to be from way outside the court in order to maintain that 90 degree angle. If you don't maintain that angle the set is gonna come from behind you over your right shoulder (if you're attacking on the left outside).
