Should You Buy a Floyd Rose Special? | Upgrading My Charvel Model III

Everyone likes to hate on the affordable Floyd Rose Special. I however, have never owned one. In this video I show the installation process of one, and do some dive bomb craziness to see if it can hold a tune. I also upgrade the pickup in my trusty Charvel Model III to the original Jackson J90C pickup. Thanks a ton to my subscriber Robert for sending me the pickup! You Rock!

They aren't bad at all man. I have 5 guitars with specials on them and the only thing that ever went wrong on one of mine was one of the saddles stripped out where the string block screw threads in. Bought a new set of saddles and no more issues. I normally upgrade to the brass block & titanium string blocks on mine and it is a vast improvement. I read that the only difference between the special & 1000 series is the 1000 has steel bridge saddles & a brass block stock where as the special's saddles & block are zinc. I was impressed to find out they both use the same hardened steel base plate which is the most important thing in regards to the bridge staying in tune.

NEVER raise or lower the bridge with strings at full tension on any Floyd. It scores the posts and wears the knife edges. Both phenomena are detrimental to returning to pitch. Just detune 3 or 4 revolutions (4 is probably better) on each tuner, raise or lower the bridge studs, tune back up the same number of revolutions, you'll be pretty much in-tune. It's quick and easy this way.

For anyone wondering, The noisy tremolo springs can be fixed by just using the trem. My strat had that problem so I just reamed on it and sure enough, the springs don’t make noise anymore

I have two guitars that have Floyd Rose specials, I've had no problems with them so far, they work like they are supposed to. I know a lot of people don't like them, but I' find them to be okay.

I've had cheap floyds in my guitars for years and they still work great.

Still have my 86 Model 4. Had the original Kahler removed and a real Floyd put on. Still a sweet guitar years later!

I had exactly this Charvel Model brand new, many many years ago when it just came out. Same colour and everything. The metal of the trem was so soft, you could spread it on bread and have it for lunch. The rest of the guitar was fabulous.

I think for moderate dive bombing, the FR special works fine. I had the unfortunate experience of the saddle on my low E becoming completely stripped where the Allen screw gets screwed in. So I’ve got some Floyd Rose 1000 saddles on the way.

Great video! I like the FR Special. I have several guitars equipped with FR Specials and I have no issues. Like you said, it's mostly about set up.

I like the J - 90 C pickups on those old charvels/ jacksons. They were really going for the metal sound.

I’ve abused my 87 model 4 and the jt-6 still stays in tune perfect. It is one of the better copies.
The arm holder is the same as the Ibanez edge.

If you do a little research you'll find that zinc and stainless steel aren't that different however zinc can be more corrosion resistant. The choice between the two is really a matter of cost and fabrication needs.
Stainless is used where less material is needed and appearance matters due to the increased cost of chromium, zinc is more for large production application.
Also note that the box said authentic, the reason for that is that the Floyd Rose Special is the GENUINE VERSION of their licensed models.
The ONLY difference between an OFR and a Special is the use of Zinc Alloy for the saddles.
I wonder how many people criticizing the use of zinc have ever actually worked with metal...
