My GTI had 170k with only regular maintenance before I got a new car. It worked just as well as any Honda or Toyota I've owned. Only it was a lot more fun to drive.

Scotty, your knowledge base appears to be stuck in the early 2000s.

I have a MK6 GTI 2011 with 150, 000 miles and have never had a major problem. A/C still blows cold and engine doesn't burn oil. Along with plenty of power and I do spirited driving with my car from time to time.
I disagree with you Scotty on this one The German made GTI are overall good cars, and MY has a DSG transmission.

Actually starting to think you have no idea what your talking about. The mk7 series of gti have had almost no problems within the community of drivers im with. Ranging from the 2015-2018 version, from 120k miles to 3000miles driven throughout no crazy problems have happened to our cars. All of us drive manual and one of us even has an R with a stage 1 tune running flawlessly these 2 years he has owned. Keep up with maintenance and its such a fun and reliable car.

volkswagen’s are great cars if you look after them correctly. especially a TDI. Mine lasted till 350, 000km before the accident and it was still going strong

Between myself and my family, we’ve had 7 “modern” Volkswagens and have had zero issues. 3.6, numerous 2.0TSI, 2.0 TDI, 1.8 TSI, all run great.

Scotty is not the guy to ask about new cars... might as well ask your history teacher about current events. If that history teacher were Scotty, he’d say... TOYOTA!!!

I know you're not a fan of German reliability but the new GTI is great! Such a great car for the money. Dump it before 100k miles tho 😂

I don't get it I have heard a million stories of people who's VW have no problems and some that have been running upto 600, 000km as well. I feel your experience is only one side of the coin. I work in the industry and check for feedback all day and I hear a lot more positive than negative. Sad to see your experience being negative in most of your cases. if you love driving cars VW is for the conscientious car lover. A Toyota unfortunately is not.

One of my cars is an 09 GTI. 150K+ miles. I have taken it in long cross country trips over the years. Still running strong, and has never given me any major issues.. seems like there's a lot of people in the comment section with good high mileage GTIs as well.. so going to have to disagree with you on this one Scotty.

I like Mr. Kilmer's videos, but his assessment of GTIs does not match my experiences. I have bought new 83, 88, 2004, and 2006 GTIs. The 83 needed some repairs and was the most fun. The 88 was less dependable (timing belt went at 40K and heater core needed replacement). Sold the 88 at 120k miles and ran into it years later at a gas station with over 250k. The 2004 was struck by lightning while we were driving, never started again, and was totaled with 6k miles leading to the 2006 GTI, which I still own. I have done all the maintenance on the 2006, it has never left me stranded, and has needed less than $200 in repair parts in 12.5 years. But its headliner sags due to living in the South. I also have a 92 Corrado (which is a GTI variation) with 102K miles that has needed quite a few repairs over 26 years, but it is still a good car today. My conclusion is VWs became much more dependable starting in 2006, the mk5 generation.

If you're a plain Jane type of person, by all means, enjoy your Toyota for the rest of your life. But if you want a bit of flavor in your life you'll need to venture out of your comfort zone.
