Once had a girl in college (she was very posh, from the city, and of course vegan) tell me that farmers hold down bulls and force them to impregnate a cow. All I could think was who tf do you know who can force a bull to anything, let alone hold one down?

People don't realize that, even if sheep were wild animals, the ewes would be impregnated every year throughout their adult lives. When female animals go into estrus, they want to be bred, and the males are happy to oblige. I don't know where people get the idea that animals choose whether or not to get pregnant, or are able to make decisions on how many offspring to have. Do they really think that a ewe decides to have only three kids and then retires?

Farmers actually play a big part in spacing out births. I know most if not all sheep are seasonal breeders but with some goats (we keep goats) they can and WILL breed all year. Some of my girls were looking for a boyfriend only a month after having a baby. If left to their own devices these animals would give birth way more and wear out fast.

These people need to realise it is much harder to STOP sheep from getting pregnant than it is to get them pregnant. Family friend had mostly Suffolks, around came lambing season and they found some Scotch mule cross lambs. They don't have a Scotch mule neighbouring farm did 😂

My family keeps a flock. Once my mom tried to "break for the year" and separated the ewes and rams. We'd done quite well with the harvests prior, and did not need the lambing profits. I think she was also worried about a harsher winter. Anyway, two weeks later those ewes broke down the fence line to join the ram pen.

I think people have a tendency to anthropomorphize animals, even when inappropriate. We see it with pets most often but it also applies to wild animals.

Dairy farmer here - what people don’t understand about animal instincts is that cows don’t get a “choice” in the matter whether they are impregnated by a bull or AI. And when a bull does his thing, it is not all nice, lovely and gentle. We have had to put down cows because their hips get broken from an over-zealous bull. AI can be far safer and easier on the cow. It also enables farmers to control genetics so even things as simple as ensuring small cows don’t get impregnated with large calves. There’s a lot more too it than assuming AI = rape. Talk to farmers people.

My mom breeds dogs and I use to get the same question, "how do you make them breed?" Chief, when the female is in heat, she is doing everything possible to get bred. Theres nothing but consent until they get stuck, then theyre pissed

Some people are so weird, if ewes didnt want to breed they literally wont let it happen, they show attraction by standing absolutely still to allow a mount
