It is an interesting concept and I've seen it used for ill in my life by opportunistic grifters. I've seen churches become corrupted by outsiders masquerading as the faithful, businesses fall due to bandits that speak with honeyed words, and once welcoming niche forums become despotic echo chambers that punished wrongthink.
One odd experiment I did was just dress in a medium priced suit, minus the sports jacket, and walk around an office area (that doesn't require a photo id badge for access) while carrying a clipboard and just wandered around. I was never stopped or questioned once during the experiment. It made painfully obvious how lax security is in those places. That was almost 20 years ago so I do hope measures were put in place to disallow unauthorized access.
My experiences has proven to me why unwavering gatekeeping is important in every group.
