Their relationship was honestly my favorite thing about this movie.

I love how the film addresses crying.

No one is above it. Kristofferson, Mr. and Mrs. Fox, the bully, Ash are all seen crying throughout the film, but unlike most children’s animations, it isn’t met with mocking, humiliation, or shame, by the cryer or anyone else. It’s a normal emotional reaction and is treated and respected as such.

Beautiful.

Every character in this movie had such complex personalities, so immersive

I love this scene for the very reason that Ash doesn’t outright apologize but you know he’s sorry in a way. When Kristofferson starts crying, Ash could’ve easily shouted “SHUT UP”, but he didn’t. The first time I saw the movie I thought he turned on the train to drown out the cries, but then the two of them watch the train intently. It’s kinda touching that despite Ash keeps treating him rudely, you know he’s not actually doing it out of pure malice. It’s also worth noting that it’s only mentioned once, but Kristofferson is the younger one of the two. Ash knows as the older kid he’s kinda got SOME form of responsibility for his cousin.

I'm a twenty-one-year-old male and this was honestly one of the most touching films I have ever seen... Brought me to tears

I don't remember the art being so vibrant. It's beautiful.

I love how they both just quietly sit and watch the train together

I've seen a lot of comments saying Ash is a bit of a cuss* in this scene, but he's only being one because he feels like Kristofferson is preferred over him and needs a little time to relax. Personally, I feel quite sorry for Ash, and actually prefer his character over Kris.

*See what I did there?

I just noticed the song that's playing is Burl Ives' "Buckeye Jim"... The lyrics right before Kris starts to cry go, "Way down yonder in a wooden trough, an old woman died of the whoopin' cough"... yikes... Maybe not the most appropriate song to play when your cousin's staying over and their dad's bedridden with double pneumonia...

It’s a nice touch how when Ash looks at Kris while he breaks down, Ash’s expression is just pure surprise rather than frustration. He lashed out at Kris because his father not giving him the approval he needed was driving him up the wall, but in his mind it was blowing off steam, something he desperately needed to do. For Kris he’s terrified of what might happen to his father, all the while being berated and yelled at by a family member in a time when he needs some sort of comfort. He’s composed and tries to keep his cool through meditation, but he’s still a kid, and Ash’s treatment of him acted like the final straw that broke the camel’s back. The voices kind of skew the image of how old they’re supposed to be, but the timescale shows us that Ash is 12, Kristofferson possibly being 1-2 fox years younger. There are a few scenes that suggest Ash has a hard time with social cues and how to read people, like when he has to ask if he was being rude to Agnes when he told her to go away. However he does have the emotional intelligence to understand his own emotions, like when he starts crying when Mr. Fox finally tells him he’s glad to have him as his son, and how Kris being in danger wasn’t his fault. So he at least understands different emotional cues. Someone else also pointed out that since Ash is older than Kris, he still has some sort of responsibility to Kris, since he still has the age and experience over his younger cousin. Even with Ash’s own emotional problems and difficulty understanding social situations, Ash never meant to make Kris cry, it was just him lashing out in a time when he desperately needed to do something to vent the anxieties and insecurities in his life. However when Kris does break down and start crying, Ash tries to apologize for it in his own way by helping Kris calm down with the train set, taking some responsibility for his younger cousin and showing his own empathy for Kris.

Always loved how realistic this scene felt. Now that I’m a bit oler I relate to this, being in a different home and being treated rudely by a family member always hurt. Especially when you’re in their home for reasons and are feeling homesick. But the way they ash approached him was also cute lol

“There’s a LOT of attitudes going on around here… don’t let ME get one…” I’ve used that line so many times in my classroom 😂

Everyone is talking about this scene and Ash and Kristofferson’s characters, but can we just appreciate how beautiful that final shot of the train running around the tree is?

Wes Anderson needs to do more animated films. This scene alone shows why.

Its at this moment i knew i liked Ash, he may be brash, but he just seeks attention, and he has a kind heart, he lashes out but in anger alone, not with the intention to hurt.

This was probably the most relatable scene from the movie. If you’ve ever had a cousin your age sleep over, you’d feel it too
