Space Debris: Houston, We Have a Trash Problem

Over 36,500 pieces of space debris orbit the earth, and as we make more trips into space and launch more satellites, that junk is becoming harder to avoid. But now governments and companies are working on ways to clean up the skies through new technology and regulation. How? I find out.

What do you think the best way to clean up space is?

Your 'map' of orbital debris magnifies the size of the debris by hundreds of times. The dots representing the trash would not be visible at that scale.

You probably could have mentioned Rocket Lab, the launch provider for Astroscale. RL is also working with another company, Aurora Propulsion, which is in the prototype phase. Rocket Lab tries to do their part too. They set their second and third stage on an orbit that will eventually de-orbit on its own.

These ideas a great for deorbiting intact satellites. However, most of the debris up there is any thousands of broken pieces the size of a penny whizzing around at many times the speed of a bullet. We need to get rid of that stuff and do it at scale.
