Transcript:
CHRIS VAZQUEZ 1: Do immigrants commit more crime than people born in the U.S.?
CHRIS 2: No. Here in 1870, immigrants have lower incarceration rates.
CHRIS 1: Is this…
CHRIS 2: A study from the future? Yeah, it is. It’ll be true then, too. A different paper from 2007 argued that…
RESEARCHERS IN 2007: Immigrants commit fewer crimes because “the process of migration selects individuals” who aren’t likely to commit crimes.
CHRIS 2: And 10 years later, researchers looked at data from 200 cities.
RESEARCHERS IN 2017: Our study found that immigrants are less likely to break the law than people born in the U.S. And as immigration goes up, property crime goes down.
CHRIS 2: What about undocumented immigration?
RESEARCHERS IN 2018: That doesn’t increase violence, either.
CHRIS 2: So when politicians — like this guy in the future — say that immigration causes crime, research just doesn’t back that up.
