Life Cycle of Garden Snails (mating, eggs & babies) | BAO After Work

Today, I would like to share with you the life cycle I observed on garden snails: mating, laying eggs and babies hatching. I started to keep snails as pet just out of curiosity. The longer I keep them, the I more I find them fascinating. Their life rituals are so alien to me, so different from any pets I've ever known. I can’t stop reading about them and start to purchase other snail varieties online. There isn’t much text on pet snails since I guess only a few people consider them as pet. So my journey is full of trial and error.

"Sometimes they will eat their siblings if they haven't hatched. The baby snails are super cute"

If you are planning on keeping a snail, read this list, i am really good with snails and have 5 of my own.

1: Getting ready
First, you need a habitat! Get a plastic container, make sure it isnt too small, or too big. (I use a plastic food container) Clean it well with NO chemicals, just with warm water. The habitats need clean soil, bacteria and bugs live in soil and harm the snails. I recommend getting garden soil and cleaning it. Get a container of garden soil and put boiling water in it. Shake it and wait till its dry again, the heat will kill bacteria and bugs. After that, make holes in the plastic container. Make sure the holes arent too big nor too small, and make sure the holes arent sharp and cant hurt your snail. Then, put your clean soil in the container and add decorations. Snails need a place to hide when they are scared. Snails are like humans, they want privacy. Get a small plant pot and flip it so it would be like a cave, then push soil into it. Add leaves and rocks, along with some sticks. Snails like to explore. Add some food and get a small bottle cap full of water in there so the snail can drink. Finally, add a cuttle bone in there, its used to provide calcium
2: Food and calcium
Cuttle bones are just the right things to help snails get calcium. Snails will munch on them. Snails need calcium to grow their shells. For food, you can put in things like: carrots, cucumbers, apples, lettuce, leaves ect. DO NOT let the snails eat salty or starchy foods such as potatoes as they are really bad for the snails.
3: I have a snail, now what?
Make sure you have a spray bottle of water, you MUST spray the habitat with water AT LEAST twice a day. When its cold, put warmer water, and when its hot, put cooler water. Snails need water. Clean everything in the habitat and change the soil at least every 3 - 4 days as snails poop alot and it makes the soil dirty. If its your first time keeping snails, only keep ONE as snails will reproduce and make little eggs. Only keep two snails if you are ready to have hundreds of baby snails. Make sure it isnt too hot or too cold in the room either. Dont add paper items because snails will eat them and its bad for them. Dont add anything sharp in the habitat because it will hurt the snail. Snails DONT need baths, the only thing close to a bath you can give them is water, spray warm water on them twice a day. Make sure habitat is
sealed properly, snails are quite strong and can sometimes lift up lids from habitats. If you have any questions, type them in the reply section.

I also raise and breed garden snails and this perfectly sums it up!! Especially with the part about seeing their food go down through their body! It’s quite cute!

I accidentally stepped on a snail over a year ago and at the time I felt so bad about it that I actually cried. People didn't really understand, but how I could I not feel bad? Snails are such gentle and complex creatures.

How to get a free pet garden snail: wait until it rains get ready put on gloves first check any rocks or gardens or even trees!. If you find one get a small/big food container (empty) then get a fitting lid after that put dirt in the container add lettuce and water and a water bowl then put it somewhere safe! Then y’all got a pet garden snail remember to take care of it! (You are finished!)

It’s your wedding night, you and your partner are finally enjoying the time along together. Suddenly, someone walks in and pokes you in the face, then lays on top of you while you and your partner are trying to get at it. They squirm around you, not really seeming to care that you’re clearly busy. This is how a snail do.

The most complete and beautiful micro-documentary about the love-life of snails I've seen up to now.

When I was a child, I used to accidentally squish the eggs and I never knew what they were until I was 11. I cried for a long while after that, with the knowledge that I just recklessly destroyed what could have been a precious life.

So cool. Thanks for making this. I found some tiny baby snails in my garden and it made me wonder about how they’re born. You answered that for me.

They move so much faster than ppl assume. I remember doing snail races as young kids 6 or 7 y/o.

I looove my garden snails! Except they are just naturally in my garden. Something always felt off about capturing something that was born free.

I'm amazed. I didn't know I needed snails until now 😂
They're very calming and always helped my anxiety!
The thing is, how often should you feed them? And what vegetables/fruits are acceptable? Is there any plants, or flowers that will do?
I already screenshot-ted most of the comments that were useful 😅
They seem to be perfect, very small and adorable, easy to keep!
Hope this makes sense :D
