Thanks for your clear explanation. If a guitar or Lute was tuned to E, what other keys, if any, could they play in, without producing off notes?
A while ago there was a Butchers bird living close by that sang the same phrase over and over and over, from October nearly till Christmas.
I tried to play the phrase on the flute one day and discovered some notes were in our tuning and others weren’t.

It was a descending song with a diddle x 4 at the end, it began on F#, quite catchy at first but after a week was torture !
The call sounded musical even though it didn't match our tuning and made me aware that Equal temperament is quite a compromise.

I wonder if the bird was using Pythagorean tuning?
