Should you buy the M2 Mac Mini? Which configuration should you get? Should you upgrade if you have an M1 version? It’s super rare for a company to give you more while charging you less - but that’s exactly what Apple did with the M2 Mac Mini. They essentially kept all the benefits of the M1 version, they added a more powerful processor and a few other very important upgrades - but there’s still one thing about the new Mac Mini that frustrates me and another thing that I want you to be careful about.

When you said "If you don't know that you need the M2 Pro, you don't need it", I really thought I wouldn't need it. Then, you just described what I do most of the time... Guess I do need it, just didn't know

In around 1988 I bought a Schneider PC/AT 10 MHz for around £700. It had a none standard slower 20 Mb hard disk which is why it was so cheap. It had on board EGA graphics. It revolutionised my gaming and word processing. It wasn't a proprietary system such as the Amiga where the base system was cheap but every upgrade cost a fortune. Over the next three years I upgraded to a 50 Mb hard disk, bought a VGA card and monitor and a bought a higher capacity floppy disk drive.

Modern Macs are even more restrictive than Amiga's were in 1988. You cant upgrade your storage for any money no matter how much you pay. A Mac Studio with a single plug in 512 Gb flash module cannot have a second one fitted even though this would be a simple plug in option. Linus Tech bought two 512 Gb Mac Studios but found that something in the firmware stopped the 512 Gb flash module from one being used to upgrade the other. Apple's only upgrade path is to buy a completely new system. The cost of extra flash or RAM chips in one of these "upgraded" systems costs around ten times the cost of the the chips themselves.

My regular M2 mini delivery is on the way to home, i increased the specs - 24GB RAM, 512 GB storage, paying extra for future proof.
My friends from US tested FCP 4k editing in FCP and photo editing with configuration 16GB RAM and 512 GB storage . They said it is buttery smooth and working like a beast.

The new Mac mini is a great value proposition and if the Pro version had been available last year when I bought my Mac Studio, I might have a mini now instead. I do love the convenience of the front I/O on the Studio, though.

In Australia, the three tiers are au$999, AU$1299, and au$1999 for the pro. The upgrade costs are AU$300. Student pricing is AU$170 off for the base mini and $150 for the pro.

I just bought the M2 Mac Mini base model for $499 brand new. It's a great computer, and very fast. Perfect for my daily computing needs. 8GB is enough for me.

In Canada. Mac M2 Mini with 512GB SSD + 24GB Unified RAM: $1, 049.00 + $500 = $1, 549.00. Totally worth it; this thing screams. I very nearly bought a base model Mac Studio but thought I’d hold out until the end of January. Glad I did.

It’s for software, web and database development. I already had a 4K monitor + Apple keyboard & Mouse. Will be adding a USB-C Hub Docking Station with 1TB SSD and a web cam.

Thank you, for another excellent comment video between both versions of Apple's new M2 "mac mini" models. You asked about the lack of either USB "C" ports or an SD card reader being located on the front of the device. For myself, I do not miss the front facing USB "C" ports but, it would be nice to have (on either the front or rear) an SD card reader. What, I have missed on all "mac mini" models since my 2010, is the removal of the DVD super-drive on the front and later Apple's Inc. decision to also drop support for Apple's remote control. It has always been a little sad that newer "mac mini" models have less ports than my old vintage model which, has a Firewire 800 port, Mini Display Port, SD card reader, audio-in port, audio-out port, and four USB "A" ports. However, the M2 pro "mac mini" will be my next desktop system (smile...smile).

In Sweden the Mac Mini starts at $825. A default translation of the US prices to Swedish has always been to add 25% VAT and then multiply by the dollar value in SEK, but for some reason this now equates to 11.35, which is way off. Either way, Apple products in Sweden are crazy expensive.

Here in Hanoi, VN, the M2 Mac Mini has not arrived yet but when it does, it will cost about 10% more than it costs in Canada. Great video as usual. You have stepped up the video out-takes with slow rolling camera shots of the computer which is cool. Your calm and informative voice is so much more believable for the viewer than the other tech reviewers. Keep it up. We love your work.

I'm still really happy with my 1 TB M1 Mac Mini with 16 gigs of unified memory. Hasn't missed a beat yet! Thanks for the review however.

Front SD card slot is a must. Another thing to worry is SSD speed. I wouldn't take mac mini until Apple fix the issues.

I have a Mac mini late 2012 model. Are my connections for printer, dvd, & 24" monitor going to work or do I need some type of different chords? My Apple keyboard has been out of order for a few years, so I would like a smaller Apple keyboard (will that be the same a my old 2012 one?). and wireless mouse. I see an M2 at Best Buy for $799.I'm 76 years young, so don't want to blow my retirement!! Thanks.

Here in Brazil the M2 Mac mini starts officially by R$ 7, 599.00. But there are some unofficial traders who sells it by R$6, 099.00.
Apple's exchange are about 10-12x because of dollar indexation, taxes and the country risk.
If they sell it by R$4, 999.00 they would get major profit without chastising us. And eventually they would sell even more units.

Here in Australia, the base model M2 Mac Mini retails for A$999 and the base model M2 Pro Mac Mini retails for A$1999. I decided to buy the M2 Pro Mac Mini since I wanted 16GB RAM and 512GB of storage and the price difference after upgrading the base M2 Mac Mini to that configuration wasn't that great so I decided to get the base M2 Pro

I like how he says, if you need it for doing multiple 4K streams, or 3D graphics, or batching photo processing, get the M2 Pro.

If you’re doing word processing and web browsing. Get the M2.

As if the M2 can’t do those things at all and only people watching Netflix should go for the M2.

Coming from a 2018 i3 Mac mini I was disappointed that my three monitor setup doesn't work anymore and the lack of ports on the back, good old apple gives upgrades and takes some standard features back, went M2 basic with 16gb.
