I am so excited for you to meet Joshua Broughton's Parents--David and Peg Broughton. They have a lot of life experience and stories to tell. Their son, Josh, is a 28-year-old with Level 2 Cerebral Palsy (CP) on the Gross Motor Function Classification System. He has diplegia, with more involvement in his legs than in his upper body. He has moderate involvement. This means he can stand independently, but he needs a second to get balanced. He can walk independently but uses furniture and walls nearby to help him balance. He can navigate stairs with a railing. He uses bilateral forearm crutches when navigating longer distances such as in public. He uses a wheelchair on vacations that require extensive walking. He has had foot, ankle, knee, hip, and back orthopedic surgeries. He did not have a rhizotomy or other tone-modifying surgery. He has a full-time job but does not drive. He also has diagnoses of Asperger's Syndrome, ADD, and scoliosis. He lives with his family. Nine years ago, I was his physical therapist. This interview is broken up into 10-15 minute segments. Watch this playlist for future segments.

This was a true back in time moment as I started to support families of my CP patients like 25 years ago, no Internet, no cell phones...lots of uncertainties, stigmatizing and overwhelm for the parents for sure. I am deeply impressed how composed the parents are and that they support each other. Unfortunately in the developmental country where I practice I witnessed many couples breaking apart over the unfulfilled expectations, financial strain and life changing demands to welcome a CP child in their family.
