we lived on a military base in oklahoma city when the moore tornado came through and there were six tornadoes on the ground at once. we could see them about three miles away from our house and steadily getting closer. all of the houses on base had built in storm shelters but we had to wait until the tornado was over for the police to come around and let everyone out of shelters.

I have the exact same
tornado shelter under my garage floor. There's a chain with a small bar on it which is attached to the bottom of the latch-pin which secures the sliding door in the closed position (just like any spring-loaded latch pin going into the corresponding striker-plate hole of any door in your house). You just pull down on the little bar and the pin slides down and the door pops open.
