Nikon D4s Preview

After announcing the development of the Nikon D4s a few months ago, Nikon has officially announced the D4s. Thought this camera adds an s I personally think it adds much much more.

There has always been this idea that when Nikon replaces their top of line model after two years all they do is add an s and some minor changes. But once you hear what changes have actually been made I think you will be very happy.

First off who is this camera for? It is for working professionals who need the best of the best with honors. There is a difference between needing the best and wanting the best. Most people out there want the top of the line but don't actually need it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting the best of the best by the way.

Before I get to ahead of myself let me tell you about the specs that I find to be the most important.

The Nikon D4s has a brand new 16.2 Megapixel CMOS Sensor. They say this is a newly designed sensor which means it is not the same as the one that is in the Nikon Df. It's always nice to know that the sensor that you have in your flagship model is not the same as in a sub $3k body.

The NEW native ISO range is 100 to 25,600 which is expandable to 409,600. Yes you did read that right and yes that is an insanely high ISO. This camera is getting one stop better in low light.

In the future the ISO will keep getting better but I think the future generations will start having better dynamic range.

There is a new EXPEED 4 Processor in this camera which helps process all the photos and videos. These processors do a lot more than just cram your files into jpegs by the way.

Release date in Japan is March 6th. Is it worth the upgrade? In my view. Nope. The D3x and D4 are good enough.

In what mode was the D4 backfocusing? I dont understand, in the skate park movie you said the 1Dx and the D4 where both very good.... 3:04 Maybe you had the left AF issue like with the D800, search for it.

I checked Nikon Web page for D4S, nowhere does it mentioned about a newly developed sensor, Its probably using the same D4 sensor with the new Expeed4, with better software algorathims.

"Because they SCREWED IT UP on the D4"  haha. Be clear, Jared! Let them know! (seriously - it's important)

How do you feel about it having only 16.2 megapixels? A higher resolution sensor would have been a nice improvement, especially if you notice something in an image, and want to zoom in digitally to get a better look. (e.g., taking a realestate photo, and outside of the window of the home, you notice a pigeon, and you think it is talking on its cellphone while flying, well with a higher res image, you can zoom in digitally, and find that the bird is not actually talking on the phone, but much worst, it is texting while flying)

So the new flagship pro camera has fewer megapixels than the D7100 (16 vs 24). Further proof that high MPs are just marketing for consumers.
I guess 16MP is either the realistic limit of the sensor or the max resolution a current lens can deliver.

In comparison to the 1dx, what are your thoughts? I'm happy with the dx.

I have spoke to Nikon support and they told me that the D4s has a low-pass-filter unlikely the D7100, any how do you think It will make a difference in any way?
but as you say what a awesome features the D4s has.

Jared, it would be nice to see and hear your opinion after working a few days with the new Fuji xt-1. I'm wondering what you might think after doing some real-life shoots with it, and am curious about how you see this kind of camera's develop. Are we really approaching a time where mirror-less take over the (full-frame) reflexes (are they capable of doing so?) AND, is full-frame going to be replaced by medium format? Knowing that what we call full-frame today is a bit misleading, giving the impression that full-frame = biggest size, since in classical photography that honour is of course solely to the large format camera's.

So what is it this time a Sony or Foveon sensor ?

I just can't believe in that iso range :O
I can't wait to see the results of the iso performance.

Those are all great upgrades... I'm also glad you mentioned the focus issue with the D4... I didn't realize until this video that the camera has an issue (good to know).  I've never had a problem with the D4 battery, but also good to know it's been improved.  I'm definitely moving ahead with it... and that's largely due to your review Jared... I'm off the fence... thanks!

You should do updates for these older cameras whether they’re worth buying in 2020. I’m getting ready to buy a d4s. Definitely not a d6😂😂 Thx for all your videos.

I had the chance to play with one of these today at the Photography show in the UK and it was pretty impressive, although I didn't take it to the max ISO the shots, I took and 16, 000+ ISO had no noise at all, focus and speed was spot on

Hi Jared, do u know if it will have an anti aliasing filter?

The D4s actually does have the same Renesas Sensor, however the reason Nikon says it is a new sensor is because technically it is as it has different micro-lens array as well as new SNR and AD converters. It also has a new Exspeed 4 processor which also helps with reducing noise, but the really cool difference is the new micro lens array which will produce sharper images when compared with the D4, which is already a very sharp sensor.

Great review, but don't you think that all the new DSLRs are on the way to be "point and shoot"?

Fro arent you a little worried about going over the hill first..Getting something when it first comes out..No matter how good a manufacturer is there is usually something wrong with the first editions..Sony, Microsoft, Apple, Other electronics companies, Nikon, they all have recalled products..does that bother you any?

With that ISO range I could finally shoot that 'black cat in a coal hole' shot I've been after!
