To this day, still the best rocket launch audio I've ever heard.

My God. The sound from this distance is massive and overwhelming. The sound up close would just boggle the mind. Beyond the ability of human hearing to experience.

Its incredible that they can build engines that harness so much energy that it sets car alarms off three miles away with the sound of the fire.

This is one of the few videos available that comes even close to capturing the real sound of the Shuttle. It's still badly distorted but it comes close to showing people the sound. For the people at such close range to the Shuttle, each crackle is about the order of magnitude of volume of the loudest big BOOM's you hear at your town's fireworks celebration. Now imagine a symphony of them like you are getting a taste of here. Maybe if this video was a couple of miles further away, it would have been better. Add the subwoofers and play it loud on a good system. That's the real sound of the shuttle.

why are rocket engines crackling: put simply, it's is so loud that the compressions (high pressure) of the soundwaves catch up with the rarefactions (low pressure), which creates acoustic booms. to be specific, soundwaves do not propagate with constant speed. since the difference between the speeds is increasing as a function of noise amplitude, this phenomenon pops up if the amplitude is high enough, see jet engines etc.

So great to find this video. I went to Florida for a holiday and was lucky enough to see Discovery’s last flight. Omg it was incredible. Stood on coco beach, this video brings back the memories of the shear pressure and force of the sound as it hits your body. I will never forget that incredible day

I loved seeing the shuttle launch. I was there for the last night launch and it's hard to describe the "pop-pop-pop" of the SRB's...It's just AMAZING!

Have you ever heard a thunder from a close distance? Windows shaking, alarms going off...well, this is many, MANY times louder. This machine can literally kill with its sound.

THIS IS THE POWER OF THE HUMAN MIND, ADAPTED TO THE ENVIRONMENT, MAXIMIZING THE POTENTIAL OF NATURAL RESOURCES. The most impressive thing: this is just what they show to us, not even close to what we have really accomplished.
