One of my buddies had a wonderful experience with these wonderful DEF systems in diesels now. DEF has a short shelf life and putting in bad DEF can be quite cost worthy. My friend topped off his DEF tank like he normally does and shorty there later his trucks DEF warning lights go on and it tells him he only has 120 miles before the truck speed gets reduced to 5 mph and also that his DEF needs to be serviced. That’s when he found out the DEF was bad and that the DEF tank needed to be pumped out removed, cleaned, dried, and reinstalled in order to drive his truck again. Looking at several hundred dollars worth of work to fix his DEF system he decided to delete it saying the hell with that saving himself money in the process as well as alleviating himself of the headache of having to purchase DEF all the time. I understand the the purpose of DEF more now than ever thanks to this video lol but these new regulations on emissions for diesels with DEF and they recycling of diesel exhaust by pretty much forcing diesels to breathe in their own exhaust just strangles the hell out of them. Although not perfect as they still pollute, diesel does burn hotter, cleaner and more efficient than gasoline engines. I just don’t understand why diesels have to have the hammer dropped on them a lot harder than gassers. Oh and if you’re trying to blame the black smoke or “coal” diesels produce please don’t. That sut is mostly carbon which settles back to the ground where it more or less originally came from.
Bottom line is I’m tired of diesel being looked at as significantly far worse pollution wise than gasoline engines for the environment. Pollutants released from gasoline engines are actually worse for the environment.

Excellent job! I love the direction TFL is going in. This video is a nice compliment to just seeing the cars perform, many people would love to understand the engineering behind what makes them all work! Keep it up Charlotte, and great attitude!

VERY well done! You're a natural and gifted teacher - taking a complex subject, illustrating and pacing in a way that makes sense to the lay person, mixed in some history, and did with enthusiasm. You have a bright future and congrats on your degree. Thanks to you and this channel for educating and entertaining me in 8 minutes.

I worked on, and taught others to work on diesel engines for 40 years. This is the best overview of the chemistry of diesel combustion that I've seen. Thanks for this, and keep this sort of information coming!

This was awesome! I am so glad Charlotte goes through some of the dangerous bi-products of diesel and why it matters and how it works. As a fellow scientist, I appreciate it!

Great video, thanks Charlotte! You obviously spent A LOT of time making that white board (mainly all the art & doodling, haha). We look forward to your future contributions as a new member of TFLcar/truck. Also, Chemistry major? Mad respect.

Excellent video and explanation. As an engineering and science geek, I totally enjoy watching informative videos like these. Would be great to maybe see some subjects like hydrogen fuel cells, history/chemistry of diesel fuel Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel vs other types), etc.

Great video Charlotte and welcome to TFL. This video was excellent and made learning not so boring. I look forward to future videos from you and wish you success. This sort of thing injects fun in addition to vehicle testing. Continue to have fun and keep up the excellent work. Giving a thumbs up. I really like the explanation of the system rather than pushing an agenda which was the key to being unbiased. You really helped with a Cliff's note explantion. Your art is awesome as well.

More Charlotte! I drove A diesel Ryder truck from Vegas to Chicago that used this fluid i have never heard of before. Now I know wtfudge it is. Excellent video. Thank you, Charlotte!

Super awesome video, I just love learning about the chemistry the makes cars work and this video struck the perfect balance between detail and a layman being able to understand. Look forward to more!

Best video this channel has ever done. My research deals with combustion and reacting flows, and I love seeing it in practical examples.
