After using Mac only for over 20 years and still having a whole bunch of them in my home office, I'm getting ready to say goodbye and switch to Linux. It was the best system around and many people today own mac because of me, but I don't like where apple is going. The glory days ended with Steve. After him, they became the antithesis of what he stood for. Mac used to be customizable, you could open a G5 with a single flick at a lever and customize the spec with hardly even needing tools. Now, everything is soldered on, so once the ram or SSD is done - so is the device. I remember every new OS having something spectacular about it in the past. Now, people are jumping for joy cause the reminders app can access calendar. It became pathetic. The next release promising AI with the total integration across the OS is not a good thing; if you want me to use AI and the cloud, make it optional. New and improved isn't the same. I'm typing this on a Mini, with a 27" iMac to my left and two MacBooks on the shelf. Got an old G4 out of nostalgia cause I can't part with it. But you gotta do what you believe is right. As soon as Asahi get's completed macOS is going buy-bye.

I'm the exact opposite. Went from Mac to Linux years ago.

I just bought a Mac and I’m probably never going to use my old Linux desktop again. Feels like the end of an era.

This includes me, I used to use Linux for a long time exclusively and switching from Windows but really the only reason why I could not go to macOS or Mac OS X at the time was because it was expensive and inaccessible. After about in 2017 was really when I was able to get access to a Mac and it started there and in 2019, I bought a new Mac. After then, I went more away from Linux and I am really multi-platform now since I can run Windows on macOS and I still use Linux for servers and specific use cases. So it’s true that I look at macOS as the best of both worlds and switched to it as a Linux user since you still have the terminal and other Linux software and tools.

I've used gentoo linux and arch linux for > 5 years. However, after I started working as a software engineer, I moved on to macOS.

Linux is nice, but sometimes after upgrading packages something is broken, and i have to fix those shit manually, and I just don't have time to deal with these minor things anymore.

The thing about Apple prices is actually kind of an illusion. As a former Windows user and Android/Linux nerd, I can say from experience that I'm a victim of "Boots Theory" (look it up.) In the long run, I ended up spending more money on Windows and Android hardware that I had to replace every other year than if I had just switched to Apple sooner. Apple products have a high upfront cost because they last for freakin' ever. But most of us have been conditioned to only look at the initial cost and not consider how that cost breaks down over long-time use. Yes, there are "premium" offerings from other companies but they very rarely feel as solid and well-built as comparative Apple products. And it's not just the hardware; Apple products get software support for much longer and are still perfectly usable even long after EOL.

That's the path I took -- Windows, Linux, to Mac.

Linux user, learning with sporadic usage since 2004, I think? It was Red Hat 7 or 8 at the time. Switched to Linux exclusively during Windows 7 lifecycle and I've never looked back, or across the aisle. Mac OS is the antithesis of what I'd want, and only their 3rd party software support is enviable. I wouldn't have it, even for free. Trust me, just because you and some limited sampling wanted to switch from Linux, doesn't mean we all do. Just because people want Mac OS doesn't mean we all do. Don't make generalizations, it's not difficult to say "a lot of people want...." instead of roping everyone in together based on your prejudice.

I feel like the best thing about Windows is the amount of different games and hardware it supports. I feel like the best thing about Linux is having your OS exactly the way you want it. MacOS has neither of those.

Bro youre dead on. Most real power users could give two shits about customizing a desktop. Work work work

The most annoying thing in linux for me is the lack of support for multi-language users. When you have multiple language layouts it is like hell with shortcuts, because every combination you use to switch layout conflicts with IDE's and other stuff. (worked on Mint, Ubuntu, Monjaro all they had this issue). Also i tried to change it to capslock, but still some global key overrides always conflicts with such keys like: Win, Ctrl, Alt. I mean it is possible to change this somehow in some distros like Lint + Mate (instead of Cinnamon) but still it is not what i expect from OS.
Also scaling support in linux is awful. (Try to use two monitors with different resolutions like 2K, 4K, FullHD) In Gnome you will need to change x11 settings to put login screen on external display, also you need to change settings for Qt, Gtk if you use fractional scaling for 4k displays. Yes i found solutions for displaying issues, but it took me a lot of time to solve this issues. Couple of months ago Ubuntu released update which made my gnome terminal super slow.(there is big input lag in terminal when you type commands) so i replaced gnome terminal to Alacritty. I'm so tired to fight with all this things at that moment, so i moved fully to mac os

I would say that you in MacOS get some of the greatness of BSD. Of course MacOS will always be more of a true UNIX than Linux. Linux usually feels like it´s in a constant state of teenage revolution on it´s mom and dad UNIX. But trust me, Linux folks; you are better of with *BSD than MacOS.

I started with Mac at work over 3 decades ago. When I went to buy my own computer for home, PC offered much more for the money, so I went with Windows. On my main home computer I switched to OS2 for a while, then back to Windows, then dual booting Windows/Linux, back to Windows, then to Linux exclusively for the last 6 or 7 years. I have Windows on my work PC and laptop. Even with all of the software freely available for Linux, there still are quite a few applications that I use both at work and at home that are Windows only. My experience with Wine, albeit long ago, was not that great.

My main issue with Linux is just inconsistency. I love the Linux freedom, but I've been using Linux off-and-on for 17 years and I've only had two computers where I could just daily it for an extended period of time with no problems. Every desktop build I've done, or gaming laptop I've bought, I end up just going back to Windows. I don't enjoy tinkering with Linux like I did back in the day.

My only issue with Apple isn't even with macOS, it's with hardware options. macOS is extremely reliable so that solves that problem. BUT I kinda do wish I could upgrade RAM. It hasn't been a necessity, but it would just be nice. Storage isn't really much of a problem any more because external SSD's are extremely fast.

Started with FreeBSD, moved to Gentoo, then to Arch, and then went to MacOS. At some point, I needed to get work done using a desktop, most UNIXes are still not great desktop OSes, and I don't have time for tinkering. I don't have time for "if only" anymore.

I started using Windows with WSL and it was just fine. Then I moved into Ubuntu, and it was good. I tried macOS and hated it. Went back to Linux.

After years on Windows, I tried moving to macOS for development, but my gamer heart pulled me back. Now I'm on Ubuntu—I finally have my games, my terminal, and Bash. But I miss Photoshop, Office, and all my other software... There’s no perfect platform, but one thing’s certain: I won’t settle for an OS that installs Candy Crush and TikTok on a fresh setup... looking at you Windows.
