Twin Legged Pletscher Bicycle Kickstand Install

This install places little noticeable compression on the chain stays. I've used it on this bike for three years, fully loaded touring and commuting to work without issue. If you are set on having a kickstand, but are afraid of damaged paint, or worse a broken or crushed stay, this method may be for you. Set up as I have shown will not leave a scratch on the power-coat.
Although the pieces are relatively easy to fabricate, you may choose to make only the templates. Determine the dimensions you need for the parts and have someone else cut out the pieces. As I've demonstrated the drilling and install is quite straight forward.
Glass companies have plenty of scrap and I'm sure for a slight fee you could get them to cut out the parts. They also have various thicknesses. Polycarbonate is used as safety glass and in thicknesses of an Inch or more, is bullet proof. Do not however, use acrylic as it does not flex well and is prone to cracking.
Any questions you may have can be asked in the comments section. I'm a architectural design, builder and not a filmmaker.
Stay Grateful
Claude
Note:
While I have made every attempt in explaining the Mounting Bracket fabrication and install, I cannot guarantee your results.

Eight years later, I have found your fitting process to be invaluable to me as I too have to custom fit a Pletscher onto my newly assembled and homemade GT Avalanche Ebike. So I salute and thank you for taking the time to make this video. 👍

WOW what an amazing video!!! I have been worrying about how best to put a kickstand on my new Surly LHT and now I know. You're a star . I'm going to share it with my bike shop. We've been  having endless conversations about kickstands. Thanks a million - awsome

Wow, not only is your information, technique and extremely invaluable so is your presentation invaluable. It is simply explained in common understandable terms so even a novice like me can fully understand!

Finally! You created a "how-to" video and included all the little DETAILS! Too often, such videos omit the smaller details and just hit the "highlights". Well....that might work for some, but I like the details. Thanks for this video!

You have my award for all time best YouTube DIY video!
While I started watching it I ordered already this stand with the original clamp+gasket :-(
Now, as I finished, perhaps will install original for short period on Surly LHT looking for time and tools/place to follow your instruction and get job done properly!

THIS IS AWESOME INSTRUCTION!

Pretty clever idea that is, i have got the same stand and i will probably do similar to what you did, many thanks for sharing this video, all the best from the UK.

Thanks for the video.
I haven't rode a bike in over 50 years, but just bought a new Giant 24 gear bike. It has no kick stand and I've been toying with the idea of just buying a regular stand. Now I see why to not do that and the right positioning for the right kind of stand. I'll ride from 3 to 6 miles a few times a day to get my legs in shape, but I want to put some flat fixing stuff on the bike as well as a rain jacket, lock etc.
So your video got me headed in a better direction than just throwing a stand on there that's made for a regular bike and showing me a good way to do that.
Thanks again

Absolutely Spiffing Video, thank you; I just purchased a similar Stand for my Hybrid/Touring 'Ridgeback Comet' Cycle without even considering how to attach it! And now I know - well at the very least have some great info on how to work a solution out.
This has been utterly invaluable to my plight, I'm so glad I stumbled upon this Video - thanks again AnonymousBicyclists.
All the best on your venture, from here in the UK; As you guys over there would say'Awesome' just Awesome :).

Man you are awesome. Excellent video, was just going to get a centre kickstand for my bike and I feel  iv learned a lot from your video, I will definitely be doing some mods on it before installing. thanks man.

very nice video and an excellent well thought out bracket. I am going to copy the idea for my cycle trip from UK to China. I don't understand people whining on about needing special tools. You just used a bandsaw for quickness, but this could be easily cut using a handsaw. Would be great to see some more videos on your channel. Keep up the good work bro

Good video & great idea. I will try this cutting down rubber hockey pucks instead of plastic. Someone with a 3-D printer should make these and sell them.

great video, but i never had any problems like that, the actual stock plate and kickstand normally have a radius to fit the chainstays and this is what prevent the stays from deforming "to some point" of course you dont have to tight the thing like crazy ;)

Great video on how to make an over-engineered bracket. No problem if you have all those machines, but it would be nice to come up with something just as good, but without needing all that stuff. How about just a rubber block in place of that plexiglass deal? The key to your whole thing is that there is a weak link that breaks or deforms before the steel tubes do. I can imagine that you could use thin washers or aluminum piece, instead of those plastic plates.  The thin washers or thin aluminum metal plate would deform before the stays get tweaked.  The rubber block could be more easily cut from any number of sources, such as a large rubber stopper at Home Depot or old tire tread, glued together, if needed. The best part of your video was your point that its not the bolt loosening, but the stays deforming that creates the inevitable looseness of the kick stand.

can you spin the pedals when the kickstand is down? i'd like to use it as a mobile workstand and spin the pedals to adjust gears, etc.

How much clearance on the side? I'm trying to find out if this would work with my 4" fat tire ebike. Thanks!

Hi Claude, thank you for your exceptionally informative video!

If I may, I have a specific mounting question:

I have recently been touring with a trailer and am convinced I need to mount the double-legged Pletscher I have just purchased. However, my bike is a 2013 Genesis CDF and has a 425mm chainstay which leaves very little space to mount the kickstand. There are two main issues: 1) The top mounting plate of the Pletscher rubs against the front derailleur cable. I note that the Pletscher's previous owner (I bought it secondhand) had filed a small grove on the plate, presumably for the same reason. I guess I could file it back some more, but I don't wish to damage the integrity of the plate in the process. 2) Second — and more crucially — the rear gear cable runs under the right chainstay. Now, by no means am I a bike expert and, so, this could be a common phenomenon. However, I'm wondering how best to mount the Pletscher under these circumstances?

Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

nice job! however compression forces will be transmited anyhow to chainstays

Another thing you could do use for the spacer, is heat a PVC pipe section and reshape it to fit somewhat rectangularly into the space, and then cut the end off the right length, or let them do it for you free at Home Depot, before you start the heating process.. The PVC pipe is very strong and just as strong as the plexiglass.

None that I'm aware of.  Some thoughts.... start off with a really well built wheel.  On my last adventure - 4000+miles - I began with hand built wheels and still had problems.  One hundred miles from home my chain jumped the rear derailleur and jammed between the cassette and hub.  Those cassette side spokes are nearly impossible to remove with the cassette in a cassette removal tool that fits your cassette, you never know when you'll need A 4" pair of Vise Grips are also handy, if it's used, you'll say, 'good idea', if you don't use it, you'll say, "well that was extra weight I didn't need to carry with me.... either way you're prepared. A pair Hemostat's  With a double wall rim it can be extremely frustrating to get that little spoke retaining nut to stay put or, worse yet, to have to get it out after it has fallen between the inner and outer rim walls.
To true a wheel curbside.... with the bike upside down use the brake pads as a good indicator of any wheel wobble.  Then as soon as possible get to a bike shop and have it trued by a professional.  I say that because after the fiasco with my chain lodged between the hub and cassette I ended up at four different bike shops because of broken spokes and I brought 4 spares with me.  Long distance travel, with a heavy load, on unfamiliar roads can produce unwanted stress on your wheels.
Ride safe my friend.
