I can't believe I haven't read People Collide yet. I thought Atmospherians was so interesting so I need to get to McElroy's new one. I was surprised to see Tom Lake! It made it into my top ten too! I just loved the experience of reading it so much. Did you listen to Meryl doing the audio at all? Patchett herself admits it elevates the novel and I have to agree. You just moved The Days of Abandonment to the top of my TBR. Sounds amazing!

I had a top 8 books of the year in 2023, They Can’t Kill Us Until They Kill Us - Hanif Abdurraqib, Against the Loveless World - Susan Abulhawa, A Sun to Be Sewn - Jean D’amerique, Let Us Believe in the Beginning of the Cold Season - Forough Farrokszad, The Spear Cuts Through Water - Simon Jimenez, My Tender Matador by Pedro Lemebel, Jazz by Toni Morrison, and House of Stone by Novuyo Rosa Thuma! I hope your 2024 reading goes well!

I've read three books by Vigdis Hjorth in 2023 and she became one of my favourite authors. I loved all of them, but I would choose Is Mother Dead? if you would like to find out if her style is for you.
I've read The Days of Abandonment ages ago, before Ferrante even became famous with the Neopolitan Quartet. It was quite the experience and I still own my copy.

thank you for this list! i'm for sure gonna add i'm a fan, beautyland, martyr and alphabetical diaries to my 2024 tbr. the way you talked about these books really piqued my interest. i'm so glad open throat was on your top ten because that was my favorite read last year. i agree it could be gay-er but i really didn't mind because that line "hello little slaughter this is what a goddess looks like" and the execution of it all was so perfect.

other favorites in 2023 was the employees by olga ravn, a horse at night by amina cain, small things like these by claire keegan, small worlds by caleb azumah nelson, and siren queen by nghi vo. it's safe to say that women authors conquered my heart this year!
