I discovered this 1957 International Metro box van online and went to check it out. Since they're so cool and relatively hard to find in decent shape and are popular with the car crowd I had to drag it home! OMS in Strategic Air Command (SAC) would have been Organizational Maintenance Squadron. That's the squadron for the crew chiefs assigned to and maintain the aircraft on the ramp. They do the preflights, postflights, refuelling, defueling, launch, recovery, and cleaning.

The dormant workhorse intended to slumber its way to no return, but was awakened as its condition was no challenge for the seasoned, veteran, brilliant mechanic to overcome. Magnificent!

Since there are indications that thing was in Rapid City ( the rebuild tag on the engine) I’d say it was probably at Ellsworth AFB and the script on the side was probably something like the 28th Bomb Wing or a numbered Bomb Squadron of some sort. Cool rig either way.

I've been waiting for this episode for so long! My grandfather bought a 61 metro (a former fire rescue truck) over 20 year ago. The truck is still in my possession. I have very fond memories of he and I going to shows and the Jefferson swap meet in it.

I've loved those vans since I was a little kid, and I'm 60 now. The laundry service, milkman, bread truck, and the Charles Chips potato chip salesman all drove these through our neighborhood every week.

Love metros!....dude...you need to make it a mobile mortske repair van ...and have it all fitted out with tools and air so when you go do revivals you got everything you need ! Schaweet man!
