Mayak, the site of the Kyshtym disaster, was a secretive Russian nuclear plant and plutonium processing facility located in the Chelyabinsk Oblast. The facility's location, which was not published on any map prior to 1980, was the site of the third worst nuclear disaster in history which occurred on September 29, 1957. The Kyshtym Disaster, preciptated a release of radiation that impacted more than 200,000 nearby residents. The release resulted in numerous deaths.
