Do you think Intel Mini PC's are still great in 2024?

The little PC is fine....the problem is Windows.

Thanks for making a video about this! I’ve been super interested to hear more about this little computer.

The SSD comparison is a bit unfair as the price is significantly different between the 2: the Geekom is $989 and the base mini is $599. Even at Apple highly overpriced upgrades, comparing the SSD performance with the similarly priced 1 TB mac mini would be more accurate. The possible user upgradable memory and storage of the Geekom is a big plus though.

Some good & some bad.

The good for Geekom:
- Better port selections
- Power button front facing.
- Better multi-core CPU performance with the Ultra 9 185H CPU.
- Full access to all X86 software and games.
- Replaceable high-speed SSD gen 4.
- Wi-Fi 7.

The bad:
- Nowhere near as quick as the M4 Mac Mini single-core CPU.
- Less efficient iGPU.
- Priced a lot higher than the base M4 Mac Mini.

It’s surprising as it’s an intel device that it doesn’t include thunderbolt 5 speeds.that would’ve made EGPU, s very interesting..I do hope intel catch up.Apple needs competition.I think the little box is an interesting item.

I’d love to see a comparison with a mini with a full pro chip.

Its good to see mini pc scene picking up but Im skeptical of Windows ability to compete. As someone who just switched to mac mini, it's all fun to be able to run a few games better than M4 (not in the native way mind you) but you really dont buy MINI PC for gaming. Thats not what they were designed for. And funnily enough with all those speeds it underperforms base M4 on video rendering. Which is a whole issue with windows and modularity. Yes you cant upgrade Mac but theres good reason for it. It's perfectly tuned for productivity. As for ports I bought HP G5 dock which we use in offices (ironically enough its almost the same size as new Mac mini so they stack pretty well) and for a couple hundreds I get all the ports I need. So much so that this windows pc has less than ideal amount of them. I can see only 2 usbc ports and 2 HDMIs. WHY??? Displayport or thunderbolt/usbc connection is superior. So I plug in my dock, I plug in 1 monitor and thats it? I'm out of usbcs?

It's good that this thing exists but even as someone who still has hard time adjusting to new and missing stuff on mac after years away from the system, I'd rather buy M4 with accessories for this price.

A very interesting review. I would like to know the clock speed the DDR 5 was running at. This review focused on both computers having a similar physical form factor. Change the form factor of the intel based computer and then you can add a graphics card of your choice and budget. So potentially providing a huge increase in graphics performance. It’s a matter of open architecture versus closed architecture.

Nice comparison on a x86 vs Apple Silicon. IMO, I would liked to have seen the Mini M4 Pro in the comparison since they are closer in pricing. The real world base Mini M4 pricing has been sub $500 recently so this Ultra 9 is nearly double even with the discount. The Mini M4 Pro has recently been as low as $1229 on Amazon. As always you are going to get more for your money with an Intel vs paying the Apple tax on upgrades.

At this point Geekom and other pc companies should also give users the ability to upgrade and max out pcs at fair prices directly from their websites not everyone wants to buy base versions and upgrade them later.

I use both device, personally I confirm to go with Mac mini.

So you are comparing a full maxed out mini pc to a base model mac mini how is that a fair? You also have not talked about price.

I'd never touch the base models ever. I actually want to have mine functionally viable 5 years and beyond... the reason for 5 is I might need a Studio soon...
