Little Willie may have been the first tank, and the most useless, but it served as a blueprint to what would later go on to become a staple for militaries across the globe. Check out today's video about the worst tank ever made, but what it evolved into is terrifying!

Prototypes aren't expected to perform perfectly. Just the opposite, prototypes are made to discover otherwise unforeseeable problems and to correct them. In this regard, Willie did his job and then some.

The tank design prototype, that followed "Little Willie", was called "Mother". It entered production as the Heavy Tank Mark.I.

"Little Willie" was intended to be armed with a Hotchkiss 40mm. Pom Pom auto cannon.

The British Royal Tank Regiment's marching song is "My Boy Willie", in honour of this tank.

Thanks Infographics, this video actually helped this morning when the news did an article on the little Willie. Got to drop some knowledge on the family.

My grandfather commanded a unit of tanks in WWI. One of the people under his command was a young major named George Patton. Patton was there to learn how to run a tank made by the Renault Motor Company (the same company that later made cars). As everyone knows, George S. Patton was promoted up the ranks and was made a General in time to command tanks to great effect in WWII, by which time my grandfather had retired. He was certainly proud of his former student though, and grieved heavily when he received word that his former student had died after having broken his neck in a automobile accident.

I remember hearing about this tank on another video. I'll watch again just because it's infographics.

I can't think of a less intimidating name than a 'Little Willie'. The term 'Willie' is also a slang for something...

Little Willie was useless because Mother France couldn't feel it inside her

How can they call it the “most useless tank”, when it was literally the very first tank??? If there’s absolutely nothing to compare it to how can it be the worst? Or the best???

Little Willie was not useless as it allowed the creation of effective tanks. It was both a proof of concept and a development prototype.

I think you guys should make an audiobook or a podcast sometime! I usually listen to these while playing games so perhaps something similar would be a great idea.
