I think what this illustrated perfectly was usable surface area vs. volume. Same volume but more usable surface area = easier storage. A lot of people getting caught up on the numbers on paper. But owning a 5th gen and comparing it to the Sequoia, the Sequoia is a lot bigger.

4Runner for the win in my book. Fits everything the Sequoia was able to fit and yet still seats 5 compared to Sequoia only sitting 4. Plus the slide out tray in 4Runner makes it easier to load and unload. Not to mention the 4Runner costs way less.

Regarding auto opening/closing hatch. The other day I was at the dealer dropping my 4Runner for its oil change and the lady in front of me was there because she was having issues with her auto closing Rav4 hatch not wanting to close. Even the tech was unable to get it to close since it would automatically start opening again. I don’t need those extra problems in my life.

I actually prefer manuel hatch all day over automatic. Hate waiting for the automatic on my wife’s highlander when I can just swing it up and close it and be on my way and depending on where the key is or if the trunk window latch is cracked open on the highlander. It was more of an annoying feature supposed to be convenient and faster ended up being way slower and getting in the way and always beeping compared to my manuel trunk 4runner which will open and close every single time the exact same at the speed you want no matter what is open or if the key is in my pocket. Doesn’t need specific things to happen for it to simply open and close.

That platform in the Sequoia looks better than I thought for dogs. Any chance you’d put the pooch in n out of the back just to see how it goes?

Both are awesome. I’d get one of each.
But the 4runner is the most practical.

At first, I didn't like the stacking shelves in the Sequoia, but after seeing this video, I can see where it can be practical. Maybe not the best for hauling lumber or furniture, but the Sequoia wins after a trip to get groceries!

Imo Toyota should’ve thought out a better design and idea or just kept it simple cause most people say they aren’t a fan of that drawer type system and then having the captain chairs just kinda part of the cargo area when the captain chairs are down. Really don’t like how it’s not flat and the folded down third row just kinda is there in the way. I lug around a ton of gear and a lot of bigger items daily and even tho the sequoia is a lot bigger by the numbers…the 4Runner is still my go to and wouldn’t trade it for anything. I permanently always keep my second and third rows in my 4runner folded down flat and basically use the cargo space as a truck bed almost and just throw all kinds of big things in there and just slide it right on in no problems. A lot harder to do in the sequoia and just not a fan of how it was designed inside with how the seats fold and the trunk space and that gimmicky drawer system. I mean it could work for certain things but then again you’d prolly have a bunch of stuff falling out or falling over all over the place with that drawer system and nothing really holding it up besides the trunk door. That even happens in my 4runner and every other suv but the trunk space is flat and big enough to wear I keep a bunch of Plano overland bins and different organizers to keep everything together. Wouldn’t be able to fit all the bins I use to keep everything upright and organized in the trunk of the sequoia with how the third row seats sit. Idk, just seems like a lazy design and not very well thought out.

We have a 4runner and was wanting to add a Sequoia to the fleet to haul the dogs around but it's way too small. Ended up with a Suburban Duramax diesel, plenty of room and it gets 50% better fuel economy than our 4runner 🤣. Even at 80mph loaded down it's getting 26mpg on the highway.

Toyota completely crapped the bed with the interior design on the Sequoia and the exterior on the Tundra. There is no contest against the 4Runner.

2023 4runner 89.7/47.2 cu ft cargo
2023 Sequoia 86.9/49.0 cu ft cargo
2022 Sequoia 120.1/66.6 cu ft cargo

I wonder what the 4runner would look like with a shelf like the 2023 Sequoia? Probably a more fair comparison because the shelf allows you to stack things in the Sequoia. Too bad the Sequoia lost so much cargo space vs the outgoing model...

Man people argue over silly things between these two vehicles or others in the segment…if you do a lot of towing /sequoia
Off-roading/ 4runner (size, smaller footprint, lighter
Fuel economy/ whatever, buy a 4cylinder Highlander
Would I love a Sequoia TRD pro yes, but I would only tow light and I want to do more off-roading so the 4runner TRD pro ( or OFF-ROAD) makes sense for me
Side note though I have two kids so if you have 3 or more than you would need to factor that obviously and go with a 3rd row 4runner and save a lot of money or just pay more and have more space for everyone with the Sequoia

I am not a fan of the cargo tray on the 4Runner it takes up a little to much space. I like the Sequoia but not having a flat rear floor for dogs is a deal killer.

The Auto hatch is definitely a plus, wish the 4runner had it or maybe there is something after market have me thinking on that one. Keep the great vids coming 👊

I’d love to see this same video between a Sequoia and Tundra. Yes the answer may be obvious, but how far off is the winner with a back full of camping stuff lets say? Coolers, sleeping bags, duffles, etc etc.. (many people cross-shopping those as well). Have had 2 4Runners and 2 Tundras. Sequoia was my next ride until they did what they did to the back. Still on the fence with what’s next. Loving my 14 Tundra Platinum for now.

How do you like the rear sliding tray?

Yeah I really wish my T4R had the auto tailgate. BTW Jon I see you like Celsius. If you buy them in the on-the-go powder packets they're less expensive vs the cans and the flavors are pretty good. I get them from Walmart.
