the only time Disney allowed this violence in this movie which is a miracle yet strange.

and remember, the original stories the Grimm brothers wrote down were never meant for kids - they were educational/moralist stories for adults

Ironically, one of the two stepsisters tends to do their same role in other variations of Cinderella.

They also hold true to a darker version of Rapunzel! Also I believe the Grimm's brothers version. Her hair is cut short and she is abandoned in a dark horrible swamp, unable to escape. The prince also gets blinded when he is tricked or forced (cant quite remember) into a thorn bush, stabbing out his eyes. He wanders aimlessly, still looking for his rapunzel. And in the movie Into the Woods, he finds her!! And gets healed somehow. Not sure if that's in the grimm's version.

Also I believe both were included in the broadway show. As well as the prince's leaving them for a second set of women, snow white and sleeping beauty. Including a reprise of "Agony" where they sing about the new women. Presumably while still married to Rapunzel and Cinderella. Fun stuff!!

Still missed the end where the prince starts chopping off heads so Cinderella wishes for a loving husband and ends her days a bakers wife with 7 kids, loving happily ever after.

I always felt like the birds should've blinded the step mom. I felt like the sisters already inflicted their own punishment and the step mother hadn't gotten her karma

Aschenputtel (german) meaning ash puddle is why cinderella has its name. The original stories by the bros. Grimm were usually visceral parables. Even red riding hood was quite different.

Fun fact. Lucy Punch, one of the step sisters, has been in two other Cinderella adaptations. Always a step sister.

My favorite version of Cinderella is an animated version I saw as a child where “Cinderella” would go to a pond to spend time with a Koi fish that made her feel less lonely. Her stepmother cooks the fish to hurt her, but the spirit of the fish comes back to help her. It was so unique from all the other versions I have seen.

Reading the original fairytales makes you realise why they’re known as the “Grimm Brothers”

Love the original musical as well~. I performed the Chinese version around China a few years back. So much fun! Good memories~

There's a full recording of a stage performance of Into the Woods here on YouTube, and everybody in it is just phenomenal - especially Bernadette Peters, playing the Witch. Disney's version is decent, and the production values are obviously a lot higher - but the stage actors are just so incredibly funny and expressive.

I can't recommend it highly enough, especially if you liked the music of the movie.

It's easy to search for - the title of the video is just "Into The Woods". It should be pretty high up in the results - the thumbnail is a sketchy drawing of a castle perched a hill, with a yellow background.

I REMEMBER READING THE GRIMM'S DARK ORIGINAL TALES WHEN I WAS YOUNG.

Give James Lapine and Steven Sondheim the credit for this accuracy, where it belongs.

They didn't write a version of Cinderella. They were the first to write down the folk tale. It's fair to say they wrote the original

That part of into the woods gave me a panic attack when I first watched it. I knew the story beforehand, but it scared the shit out of me to watch their faces and stuff.

I have a theory is that the godmother/tree basically cheated think about it the shoe never fit any of the ladies of the whole entire kingdom right so what if the magical slipper was changing its shape so it can only fit Cinderella foot just ever so slightly on the inside so that it won’t mess up the illusion and so that Cinderella is the only one that fit it and escape her tragic life

Judy Punch has played one of Cinderella's stepsisters four times. First in Cinderella - a 2001 British TV movie, second in Fairy Tales - a short-lived BBC series that modernised fairy tales, and more famously Hattie in Ella Enchanted and Lucinda in Into the Woods.
