Formula SAE, or Formula Student cars, are student designed and built, Formula 1 style cars. They're a stepping stone for Engineers to get into real world, hands on design and Manufacturing of a race car. Some students go on to build careers in motorsport, and even Formula 1.

This video takes an in depth look at what a Formula Student or Formula SAE car is. It also includes on boards of 0-60 mph testing (0-100 km/h), and on boards of autocross and testing. I go over my time on the team as well. Thank you UConn Formula SAE for letting me film this video, my time on the team was truly invaluable.

I’m an accounting major at the university of Cincinnati and in the SAE team here and I can attest to this, it’s a wonderful experience and you learn a LOT. Even as someone that’s not engineeringly inclined, I learned a lot and still do everyday. 10/10 experience!

We did electrathon at my high school, and to be honest, it was pretty fun. Of course it's a very different end goal as with electrathon you're looking to go the furthest, not necessarily the fastest. It's still awesome designing something from scratch and watching it come to life. These types of programs make people use their creativity and think outside of the box. Plus the mechanical comprehension you gain from it is invaluable.

Was part of a team that came third in FSAE-Australasia. It's a fantastic experience with a mix of design, management and hands on work with blood, sweat and tears you would never really experience in the "real" world.

In 2012 I was part od Formula Student. Politechnika Wrocławska was one of most consistent competitors. Year by year we was on top (but not always top1). Lot of fun, excellemt learning experience and the best feeling ever when something built from scratch actually work :)

Started on the UF fsae team this semester in my freshman year, in the first 3 months I have designed 2 pcbs which are being manufactured, something I won’t get to even attempt in class for many semesters, learning a ton of the practical skills needed for the industry. Can’t recommend joining enough.

Perdue University here, 1990 - 94 SAE and mini baja. We got a computer in 1991 with AutoCAD on DOS (yes, pre Windows). Absolutely huge learning experience and fun! These cars they have nowadays are insane. 👍

It's a joy to watch the car moves! I am an alumni myself, and still following the Formula Student world. It's such a fascinating event! And yes, I still remember I was always shaking everytime I stepped out of my Formula Student car😉

I just now am becoming a part of UT Arlington's FSAE team and it's amazing. Even though I was thinking of transferring to UT Austin I'm genuinely reconsidering it as I love it here with UTA being the top FSAE school in Texas.

UK formula student member here: I joined Queen Mary to study aerospace engineering, and it's been a year since I joined formula student, from which I can say as a composites team member I have learnt so much about cfd, materials, and hands on experience that I would have never learnt in my time of studying aerospace engineering, so if you like cars, even if you know nothing, join, and I promise you that the amount of knowledge you gain will be immensely valuable in your future of engineering or design or whatever you study :)

I was a member of one of the top FSAE/FS teams during my time in college and it was one of the best experiences I had when I was in school. Also pretty cool to be able to talk about all the alumni that we have working in some of the top categories of motorsport, as well as the automotive and aerospace industries.

The cars are so fast that the UAS Stuttgart (Germany) recently broke the world record for a 0-100kmh (0-62mph) time. Their new world record is 1.46s

WISH we had Formula SAE when I was in Engineering School decades ago... I went to college off years of Kart racing, would have LOVED this F SAE stuff !!!

Am now apart of a Formula Student team. Last year when I decided not to join I think everyone was being forced to go full electric or something. Which was a horrible idea as safety concerned meant everyone going back to combustion engines. Lol. Worth a shot ig, but the fire risk from the electronics was too high. They were a lot faster in acceleration though as one could expect.

I had the pleasure to sit in one, fully dressed as a racing driver at a shooting. Fun fact, the engineer students created a snake game to play with on the steering wheel. Unbeatable

My university does not have enough resources to compete in Formula ZAE but we compete in BAJA SAE. It's fun to work on and the cars are simpler and don't require carbon fiber. They aren't fast but they are as fast as they can go while keeping safety a priority.
