Opera was famous, way back in the day, for being the most lightweight browser. It wasn't free, but they would later release an adware version. Kids these days probably don't understand this, but the browser itself had ads showing up on the toolbar. Opera was also released for phones (before the touchscreen smartphones existed), even on Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii. Their HTML engine (Presto) was really ahead of everyone else. But since 2013, they killed it, and switched to using Google's Webkit/Blink engine. It's no wonder, once you get rid of the engineers that made your product relevant, that your product becomes shadier every year.

Opera was my first ever browser I used on a PC. But when it started to get few updates over the years, it also started to feel bit ridiculous and weird as well. So I moved to Firefox after using Opera for about 2 years. I still don't like Opera because it fells like a broken browser.

Its official discord server with like half a million people is even creepier, mods are very much able to ban you if you say anything by the likes of opera being a chinese company or it being straight up spyware or creepy. They also give you a generic response saying that opera hq is located in norway and therefore complies with norway privacy laws if you bring up any skepticism regarding their business practices.

Though sometimes they say that it spies on you just as bad as other browsers like chrome sounds fair on the surface.

They recently released Opera One. I read something about it being an alternative to Opera's browsers and would offer more privacy. However when I did take a look, it was indeed, owned by Opera which upsetted me. However, it offers really nice modern looks. LTT made a video about Opera GX a long time ago to talk about it's privacy concerns, but there's probably still been plenty of big content creators supporting it since they're getting fat bags of cash for it. Obviously you should ask yourself "Why are they spending this much money on sponsorships and where does that money come from?" to realize that something ain't right. I will continue to avoid it like the pest. Firefox is all I need.

My biggest issue with opera is that it seems like they actually are spying on me like my memory usages goes nutz when i start to type weird things, and just gaming it lags my computer and my computer has the latest components thats why i stoped using opera.

All things considered, opera is still a very good browser, it's got the sleekest design of them all, great functionality, very fast, ad blocker works great, convinient to use and now it also has mods
So let's ask the question, why does it really matter? It's one of those cases with people finding out about something awful despite it being done for years
Opera GX isn't the most privacy friendly, but what kind of risk comes with it? You can't just get a virus because you downloaded GX, your safety isn't compromised, no one is sending out a hitman after you for no reason, it isn't a malware, so the only reason to not use it is because you feel insecure, the only way i can describe it is that you are naked in your home, scared that someone will come in and see you, there's no door either, but your worries are in vain as you live in a discreet place where literally no one else lives in a 20 kilometre wide area, or maybe you're standing in front of a lion with millions of people besides you, scared the tiger will eat you, but the tiger just sniffs away at everyone
