Mate, you need to upload two videos a week. One is not enough. I really enjoy your videos and dream on catching fish like you.

In South Africa the good old classic is a Tin Metal spoon.

When the fish is under 20 meters from shore
Drop yr rod tip into the water. Helps to prevent fish jumping and spitting hooks out
Learnt this when I was 18 chasing herring and tailor. Also works for many other fish

Hi Roger I have found salmon have very soft mouths, I think this is why we drop a lot of fish while retrieving them, I have swapped to single inline decoy hooks and have had a much greater success, cheers for all the effort and knowledge you share with all of us Markc

5:53 when the water is flat like that I belt three casts in across the top of the water (to attract attention) then cast to catch I would also want a silver or gold spinner to get lots of flash in clear water.

Those beaches are superb.

We are all adding our idea about how to keep them from jumping and throwing the hook, so I will have my go now. :)
The most important thing with Kahawai ( which Australians call sea sea salmon ) is that you keep some weight on them the entire time.
And the reason is because their mouth has a lot of weak parts compared to other fish, to bite, the fish hinges open its mouth like a bag, and when it is open like that, a large part of it is very thin cartilage with paper thin skin on it.
And if the tip of your hook goes through that, it tears a slot in it till the bight of the hook is stopped by the jaw or the hinge structure of the mouth.
And then you have almost certainly not got the tip of the hook and the barb set in anything, you are holding the fish entirely by pulling the bight ( inside curve ) of the hook on whatever stopped it pulling through that thin section. Imagine holding up a bucket by crooking your finger around the handle.
Now, when you let the weight off the fish, he wags his head, and half the time the hook simply flies free of whatever it is pulling on, and the tear in the skin doesn't stop it. Ad they like to jump, so you have to be ready the instant they do and increase the weight you have on them, because once in the air, they will come towards you much faster, giving themselves some slack. And as we saw in the clip, they throw the hook very often once they are in the air.

Once you have caught a lot of them, you will know this is all true because of how often
They get free the instant you give them any slack
They drop off the hook by themselves at the boat or on the beach
You find the tear I am talking about with the hook just laying in it without the tip and barb being in anything. As we saw in the clip.

If you want more hook ups with lures take the trebles off and put assist hooks improves hook up rates

one of my favourite form of fishing: casting metal jigs in the surf.

In England we tend to slow down the lure retrieve, absolutely loving this video, your brilliant at explaining everything your doing, thank you.

Keep the videos coming, Roger, they're great!
As others have said, I like to swap treble for an inline single hook plus an assist hook. Also when playing the fish I try to keep the rod tip low and at an angle, say 45 degrees either side of me rather than pointing straight towards the fish, hopefully reducing slack line when fish jumps. Having said this you're always going to lose plenty on lures, but it's great fun.

Another great video Roger. I love to watch when the time watch comes on and counting the time to hook a fish 😁🤩

Loving the variety - thanks Roger.
Until recently, 90 percent of my beach fishing has been with metal lures. I changed most of my metals over to single hooks a few years ago. I reckon I get a few less bites (action?) but once hooked up, my landing percentage is better.

Thanks Roger for you amazing videos, I actually have you to thank for a lot of the fish I catch, I’ve adopted the stinger rig for my fishing and it works really well

I injoy your videos cheers mate from Norman hill

In river fishing, i use a feathered double assist hook + a short free flowing stinger hook. The catch rate is v high, no escape when the stinger hook hits. All types of fish cannot resist a shiny micro jig. Yeah! 😂

I was surf fishing once and saw the gulls dive bombing a school of bait fish a few hundred meters away directly in front of me. The school made its way closer and closer until it was within casting distance. Salmon were feeding and forcing the bait fish closer in.

Man… that was HUGE fun. Pretty much a hookup with each cast. 3 or 4 were absolutely huge and I actually lost a massive one as it hit the shore break. I’ll never forget that session. 🎣🎣🎣🎣
